I am generally a dedicated carrier captain, since I in general really like the concept of having pets around and depend on the damage of pets as well as my own,
HOWEVER
I also fly a fleet Avenger (beams) and whenever I fly a carrier (mostly an Obelisk) I really have the feeling that I am wasting TONS of potential by not flying the Avenger.
There is literally no area where the carrier is outperforming the Avenger and I wonder if I am doing something wrong, or if this is really the cross that carrier pilots have to bear for flying what they like?
Regarding the fits:
The Avenger is the cookie cutter Antiproton A2B beam setup
The Obelisk is beams with the T3 Romulan pets (not yet T5)
Are there ways (DOFFs or something) that increases the performance of the pets? Since they feel kinda weak.
Would getting another carrier help? Recluse or Jhem Hadar one?
An Aux2Disintegrate build is a hard act for any ship to follow... probably your best bet is a Jem'Hadar Dreadnought, since it can a murder-at-will build, with or without Aux2Batt.
Another thing to look at are Elite Swarmers, which deal crazy amounts of damage and are easily replaced (you'll need to replace them, since they do die frequently). With swarmers, though, I'd run a not-Aux2Batt build, since you'll want the Aux power and doff space to help your hangar refresh rate.
When it comes to carriers, I swear by the Jem'Hadar dreadnaught carrier. Fantastic survivability, and the ability to run the Jem'Hadar attack ships as hangar items is unparalleled.
It, in my opinion, has some of the best work out there. There are probably a few kinks I may need to work with on it, but its a good build. The Obleisk really isn't a good ship. If you like to run science, the Recluse is the way to go, but do note that running Aux2Bat on that would not be good. at all. I have both that and the Jem dread, and the Jem'Hadar Dreadnaught is the best way to go. She blows the Obleisk out of the water.
The carriers are mostly science ships, making it difficult to compare to a 5 frontal weapon dps ship.
The carriers *should* out-tank the avenger all day long. Not that tanking is exactly what you had in mind, but that is one area it out-performs.
Pets make up for about 1 weapon. So my carrier, the recluse, is effectively about a 4/3 weapon and should be able to keep up with a 'beamscort' for dps, give or take (I use ap dual banks up front, ob beam, cutting beam, and 1 ap turret). The escort still has more tac consoles and weapon power but I have gravity well and free APbeta spam from pets and some other tricks. The escort is a little more dps, but I am infinitely tougher and can get close enough for what my ship IS. And I can swap officers to be a pure sci ship or pure tank, the escort can't.
The 4/3 weapon JH (2 bay) carrier, then, with THE BEST pets, should be able to "get close to" the avenger. It will still be a little lower dps, but it should reach ballpark. If dps is all you care about, that might be an issue. If you enjoy flying a carrier, though, the JH or recluse depending on your needs can do *more than enough* dps. I am not sure carriers can be top contenders in pvp, however. The slow turn, pets dying to FAW spam or other aoe, it would be about like having a weaker cruiser (no cruiser commands, worse turn rate, and fewer weapons). I could be wrong there, not a big pvp person, but that is my initial impression of it.
Im always shocked to see carrier Fed captains. Im happy you enjoy the style, I just dont get why you wouldnt do it on a Kling where you can get a Mirror Vo'Quv VERY cheaply on the exchange and experience the raw power of Advanced or Elite Birds of Prey? Or even other pets that give you free contraband and such. I have pets for my Fed Galaxy X . . . but the options just arent as cool as they are for Kling IMO. I agree Jem pets kick, but so few can afford them.
I've gotta admit, I like my Atrox and it's my ship of choice for lazy PVE work, but truth be told I'm always a lot more useful to a group in my Chimera or Armitage.
And having just looked at the price of those Mirror Vo'Quv's (700k seriously?) I'm shocked and will be rolling a klingon alt, if this doesn't work out, I blame you

It should work out. It's a dependable workhorse. And yeah, the prices are amazing. Then again, most Mirror ships are cheap because of the higher drop rates. They re-release them more often as additional tidbits onto a new lockbox (Mirror Vo'Quv, for example, was a 'rare' drop from the Dominion lockboxes and Voth lockboxes), and a TON of them were probably received back when Mirror ships were first introduced. The drop rates on Mirror ships were crazy.
Clearly I'm a fan of carriers if you look at my sig. I'm going to echo some past comments but it's worth repeating.
The best carriers I have used:
1. Recluse - It's super versatile, just switch the commander boff slot and you get three different ships in one. Commander Eng for on of the tankiest ships in the game, Cmdr Sci for arguably the best sci spammer in the game, Cmdr Tac offers a balanced carrier with solid dps.
2. JDread - Not very versitile but a powerhouse (if only the JHAS pets didn't cost hundreds of dollars to get...)
3. Vo'Quv/Mirror Vo'Quv: Excellent ship for a variety of builds. I once ran a drainer Vo'Quv which shut down tac cubes solo.
4. Obelisk: I made an Aux2Batt build which did pretty well in STFs.
That leaves out a lot of other carriers which I don't have. But I really think if you want a good carrier on the cheap, roll a KDF toon and get a Mirror Vo'Quv. It's a really great ship.
For tac carriers, there are two choices: The klingon fleet Kar'fi, or lobi jemhadar dread. Both have 4 tac consoles, 4/3 weapon layouts, and tac heavy on boff. Kar'fis' secondary focus is science, can fit 2x grav wells, but between tac and science there's almost no room for eng. Jemhadar's secondary is eng, and can fit a2b. Elite Jemhadar attack ship pets use dual polarons with rapid fire III. Elite Fer'ja pets use dual ap with rapid fire III and tricobalt with heavy yield III.
I love my Jem'Hadar Dreadnought Carrier. I do not own the JHAS pet (look at my sig), but I will say that it's a really good carrier. Between my JHDC, my Atrox and Obliesk, it's my favorite. To be honest the JHDC is a overweight escort. It can DPS with the best of them (which says a lot because of the power creep in this game and how that ship came out in January 2013).
The Recluse is the batman of the carriers. It's so versatile it can handle any situation. I have stated in the past that because of this versatility, that makes it the best carrier in the game. I have also stated (multiple times) that if Cryptic had the balls to give my beloved JHDC a universal Lt.Commander slot, the Recluse would be in serious trouble (because that would allow for a Gravity Well ).
Get the flight deck DOFF for your carriers. That'll help increase their abilities. Luckily, their not much money on the exchange (between 300,000 EC - 750,000 EC).
One day Cryptic will be free from their Perfect World overlord. Until that day comes, they will continue to pamper the whales of this game, and ignore everyone that isn't a whale.
I don't have one yet but my BF flies a recluse on his sci and a jemnaught on his tac. the jemnaught has elite scorpions. to see 12 HY plasmas launching at once is kinda scary. I think with the scorpions you should probably build a tetryon ship to help knock down the shields.
The reward you get for doing the long Catian/Ferasan DOFF chain.
There are several carrier space officers. I use a cheap one that gives my pets extra damage in escort mode. They fight the same in any mode anyway. These are very cheap considering what active space guys sell for .... +20% damage I think? I noticed an immediate improvement.

If you can get the attack ship, do it. the hangar item is fantastic for the Jem dread, and its a super fun ship to fly!

Carriers are plenty competitive, but they are not easy to play. It takes a ton of work to fly that pig around.
I love her, but I finally said the 2-4k DPS I lost was worth it... I bought the fleet version... but I still haven't flown her yet...
Loving my Dread for now. I out perform my Avenger in her, too.
