BUG: Launcher lock-up on attempting to patch Tribble.
DESCRIPTION:
I attempted to patch Tribble today using the standard launcher (using ARC). It got to about 37% or so and then locked up. I cannot switch to the window and have to use the task bar or task manager in order to exit from the launcher. All subsequent attempts to use or patch Tribble have resulted in the launcher simply freezing and I cannot switch my focus to it. I do not know of any other abnormalities.
COMMENTARY: I have had other problems with STO recently, though this is a relatively new one. I do not know if it is related to my other bug report, re: sometimes being unable to load Tribble with apparent graphical problems. I do not know of any problems with my installation.

I have been having launcher lockups like this since the Season 9 updates have started being put on this server. However, when I have been able to get onto TRIBBLE, I have not yet seen any graphic issues.

I have also recieved lockups from the launcher when launching from Steam. In addition I have just tried launching from ARC, then updating TRIBBLE from the launcher, and still receive lockups. I believe these errors are coming from the launcher, and not specific to Steam or ARC.
I was having issues patching tribble earlier. Not sure if this is the same issue.
In my case, I tracked it down to the shaderCache.hogg file.
Tweeted to Brandon about it and he informed me the file in question is pretty big so may take a while to patch.
To check if you're having the same issue;
1. With launcher open and patching, press Ctrl+X to open the tranfers window.
2. If it has frozen/slowed to a crawl like mine had, there should be one entry listed in the tranfers window "platformbin/pc/shaderbin/shaderCache.hogg".
3. Sit and wait for it to patch the file, or go to \Playtest\cache within your STO folder and delete shaderCache.hogg, forcing it to redownload the file from scratch.

Just by opening the Transfers Window seemed to cause it to work it self out...
Yeah that Transfers stuff is broken for me. It locks up the launcher entirely. Can't click anything on it, and Windows Task Manager says that the launcher is using 0 resources. Its dead, Jim.
Launcher lock-up for me tonight as well. I managed to get a Force Verify cycle in. However, at the patching sequence it locks up and the memory usage skyrockets.

Yeah I don't think a big file is what we're talking about. When it freezes, the progress "ticker" (. .. ...) stops and the buttons become non-interactive. clicking on the launcher icon from the taskbar does not highlight it or bring it to the foreground, and the only way to stop it is to end the process from from Task Manager.
Add me to the list of folks who can't patch tribble. Got to 35%, and completely hung. Killed app and restarted, gets to 'patching' with no progress; and not hard drive activity at all - launcher goes 100% unresponsive. Rebooted, same issue.
Holodeck works fine though.
Edited to add:
Did a force verify on the actual Tribble client, which completed successfully and as far as I could tell didn't give me any errors, but as soon as it went to 'patching' status 100% launcher hang. (Have to kill the app from the task manager; and even there, it takes a few clicks before the not responding option comes up and allows me to kill it.
I monitored my system for 5 minutes during the launcher hand, and the application was at 0% CPU usage, I had NO LAN/Internet activity showing, nor any hard drive usage; so Brandon thinking it's a shadercache.hogg issue (which has been his go to reply for anything launcher related for 2+ years) is incorrect. I also can't get the Transfer window to come up when the launcher is in this state, BUT if I have it up prior to attempting to patch Tribble I see a 'no connection' message in one area and see '0/0/0' in the 'received', 'actual' and 'link' entries; and eventually get a '(not responding)' in the Windows border of the 'Transfer' window itself. The other interesting thing is, IF I have the transfer window up, I can at least close the actual launcher without having to use the task manager even when I see '(not responding)' in the transfer border.
Again, connecting and patching top Holodeck works fine, and verifying the actual Tribble client works (and completes) - but when it goes to 'Patch' on the launcher button and 'patching' on the launcher progress bar for Tribble - instant launcher hang. There's either a problem with the patch servers transferring the Tribble client, or some weird patch/Tribble client build interaction that the STO launcher can't handle (and no it never outright crashes, and I don't get the cryptic error handler at any time. I also don't have/am NOT using ARC to start the STO launcher. (maybe you guys are making ARC mandatory with Season 9 launch, and this build is looking for something from ARC to even complete patching? <-- If so, I won't be doing any further Tribble testing myself.

I finally managed to get in by starting a tribble patch, stopping it before it froze up, switching servers and back and then patching again. See if that works guys.
Got to 37% and then locked up. On subsequent attempts I don't even get to a percentage, it locks up almost immediately. Tried the steps quoted in the post below and no dice: I can't even read the file being updated in the Transfers window because the path is too long and the launcher freezes up again before I can resize the heading to read it.
Renaming (figured this would be safer than deleting) the shaderCache.hogg file didn't help, either. Still locking up almost immediately.

I'm running the launcher through Steam for what it's worth. I can try with Arc tomorrow, but based on what the others have said it probably won't make a difference.
I have tried all the suggestions given, but like the OP describes, the Launcher is locking up when it attempts to patch.
I also see the Launcher Memory usage spike to 400ish MB just before it freezes.
When it freezes I cannot interact with it, use the CTRL+X command, or focus the window, and I must use Task Manager to terminate the application.
I am able to access Holodeck, and was also able to Patch Redshirt, it just seems to be tribble that is the problem.
I did the Ctrl+X thing to open the transfer window before I attempted to download, and it also freezes up. This is the first build I have had trouble with the launcher.
I see others re getting rather far into the patching process before they freeze, so I thought it was worth mentioning that at the bottom where it verifies the version information, mine get to Patching and does 2-3 dots after it and then freezes, I never even get the %.
From what I can see in my transfer window the launcher locks up while getting the patch manifest. So basicly he freezes while still getting the file which tells him what he should patch.
Last night it locked up for me as well, but when I tried it just now, it started up right away, and it completed. My suggestion is to not worry about the patch for several hours, that's how it went with me.

Conversely, just tried it again now and it still locks up.
...talking to players is like being a mall Santa. Everyone immediately wants to tell you all of the things they want, and you are absolutely powerless to deliver 99% of them.
I finally managed to get in by starting a tribble patch, stopping it before it froze up, switching servers and back and then patching again. See if that works guys.
Similarly, I was able to get into TRIBBLE last night by clicking on the TRIBBLE button *before* the default HOLODECK server verified the current server build. (Usually I wait for the launcher to verify the current live patch and the button says "Engage" for HOLODECK before switching servers). I'll have to try it again tonight (or the next time TRIBBLE is updated) to see if this continues to work, or if that was just a fluke.
I have this problem also, and are working to try fix it now.
Using the good old fashioned Cryptic launcher, but now I've discovered that when patching Tribble it goes to another install location I have in the Steam folders.
Deleted it all from there now and trying..
Edit: Now it patches the whole "Playtest" folder to the correct location. Let's see if it finally hangs again or not.
Edit2: Now it hangs at 94.6% and I have to terminate the activity through the taskmanager. I had to do that before also, to be able continue with anything.
Edit3: A final desperate attempt to launch with Force Verify seems to have fixed it for me.
I just ran a forced verify, which took about 15 minutes. During the whole time, memory usage by "Star Trek Online.exe *32" was about 168MB. The app itself was in "not responding" mode (constant "wait" cursor), but Task Manager showed it was active.
When it finished, it started patching again. Memory usage shot up to about 439MB, but all activity stopped. The Transfer (Ctrl-X) panel shows that it's stuck on "Playtest/.patch/StartrekClientBeta.manifest", State is "REQ_DATA", Blocks "2512/7591", % "33.1", and Rq'd "500KB".
After killing the task in Task Manager, I took a look at the .patch directory. StartrekClientBeta.manifest is 11.5 MB (12,117,124 bytes) in size. I tried moving the file to another location and restarted the patcher. It recreate/downloaded the file, and then promptly locked up again.
This all started after actually being able to get into the game one time, but it kicked me to the login screen with a "version mismatch" warning. I was pretty sure there hand't been another patch between the patch notes post and the hour I tried it (about 11:30pm PT), but I exited and restarted the patcher just to be safe. That's when all the lockup problems started.
It seems that there may a problem with the StartrekClientBeta.manifest file itself received from Cryptic. What's puzzling is that it works for some people but not for others.
I had the same issue once with the first Season 9 Tribble patch, then 6 times with the second one. Each time restarting the client fixed it (though I had to restart it several times for the second patch to apply correctly).
With the third patch, nothing worked. So I deleted my /playtest folder. So as I wrote this Tribble client is redownloading (17% and increasing) without any lockup.

Is it normal for the launcher to use 400k+ of memory when patching?
Daizen - Lvl 60 Tactical - Eclipse
Selia - Lvl 60 Tactical - Eclipse
Mine was normally sitting between 41K and 50K but when it locked up it quickly jump to 400+K of Memory
In my case, I tracked it down to the shaderCache.hogg file.

Based on others' reports, it sounds like it may have been a coincidence and the Force Verify may not have actually done anything.
1) This lockup only happens when patching the TRIBBLE build. HOLODECK and REDSHIRT are unaffected.
2) It has nothing to do with Steam or ARC, so it must be the launcher itself.
3) It happens at different points during the (attempt to) patch.
