Bortas build woes.

Hey guys, I've been flying my Mogh for a while now but felt the need to bring my Bortas'qu out of retirement for a change. Struggling to find a happy medium with the build though, I'm using the three pack tactical cruiser atm but find myself struggling in events like CCE since I was using cannons I nicked off my Mogh (don't have decent beams) which gives good DPS especially when fully buffed but the negative defence bonus is killing me (literally) especially when combined with the shield penetration the CE can put out (even with EPTS3/TSS on).

So, I was wondering what fellow tactical captains are using on their Botas's. I know cannons aren't ideal for a brick such as this, and would prefer to avoid a full on beam boat so was wondering if there were any creative builds to mix things up.

Also, is the KCB overrated? Am I better sticking something else in there?

This is my current layout:

Fore: Disruptor DHC x3, Bio-neural warhead
Rear: KCB, Omni-AP, dis turret x2
HG equipment set with obelisk core for 2set AP bonus
Eng: 2x pieces of 3 console set, 2x ablative armour
Sci: last bortas console
Tac: Disruptor coils x5

Qa'pla!

Oh man, and I was about to post my build up to see what people thought of it.

I run my Tac Bortasqu' as a beam boat, much to your woes, but this ship does EXTREMELY well at pretty much any situation I throw her at. She has decent damage capabilities all whilst being able to survive for long periods of time in PvE. I rarely if ever blow up at CCE and consistently keep placing 1st place at it, and it's a fairly simple build, with a bit of jack-of-all-trades thing going on.

It's meant to be a crit-friendly tanky battlecruiser I got built here. She could be a bit more damaging were I to swap an Engi console for the Zero-Point Energy Conduit and Tachyokinetic Converter Consoles for the extra CrtH, as well as Rommie embassy BOffs, but I'm pretyt happy with my build where its at.

If you're using cannons on the Bortas, use 4 DHC up front - you'll get more mileage of those 5 tactical consoles than you will with a torpedo. If you're not running RCS (or at least armor with turning modifiers), you're probably spending a lot of time not even utilizing your primary firepower. Also, the Omni-array is going to steal a lot of power from your DHCs; I'd suggest replacing it with (photon or plasma) mines for close range point defense. Unless you're running the whole Assimilated shield set or the assimilated console, it's probably not worth running slotting the cutting beam on the ship. You're generally better off with pairs of turrets to avoid miss-matched firing cycles, so perhaps an aft cluster torp would make a nice surprise for anything that tries to get behind you.

All that said, the proliferation of aux2bat BFAW and Comm Arrays means you're going to generally be better off with beams on the ship now. Even if you don't want to run broadsiding arrays, dual beam banks would give you better coverage and range than cannons(which you generally want to be within 5km of your targets most of the time).

Thanks, I'e saved two setups for my Bortas now. One with mostly beam arrays and another which I titled "siege mode" where I've got cannons like you suggested and turrets aft with the breen cluster torpedo.
