As it apparently seems that Cryptic finds it easier to change BO skills than anything else, can we at least look at these skills...
Tachyon Beam -
0.2-4% (depending on rank and aux power) reduction to shield resistances (stacks up to 10 per target at a rate of one tick every second)
Sorry, but Tachyon Beam is broken. A single tractor beam + doff drains more shields over time than the 10 pulses of tachyon beam, AND THAT'S BEFORE TRACTOR BEAM MINES, AND PETS are taken into account, to which the DOFF's also effect. Conceptually this skill is broken, sure you can stack it with CPB, Tetryons and Target Subsystems, Tractor Beams and a whole bunch of flow caps, but the tachyon beam only accounts for a minicusle amount of shield drain from the total - it's hard to parse, (lol) but that's the reality...
And any sci captain who worth their weight in salt knows that TR + ES + target subsystem is far more effective way to disable shields than a relatively high ranking science skill.
I recommend changing the skill to -shield resistance, because overlapping shield resistances = a far bigger problem in the game, a far more common problem in higher ranking matches.
A common issue I get with this is that i'll make escorts even more powerful... It might make some escorts better at taking out ships, but not without dropping a heal, and being an aux dependant skill, they'd have to be other accommodations involved. Basically, the opportunity cost on an escort would be, and should be pretty high. Destroyers with tl comm sci should and will benefit, given how prevalent and strong DEM and EWP are I really don't see this as OP. Hell, it probably solves a lot of problems. And as for vaping, given that this skill requires time to stack, I don't really see it as something that would help mini - not that they need any more help.
Aceton Beam now becomes Aceton Pulse
An *km shockwave (depending on rank and aux power) emits from the ship dealing small amounts of kinetic damage whilst clearing all spacial anomalies from space (EWP, TR, GW's) 2 minute CD, 1 minute GD
Aceton Beam is useless, It's too high a rank of skill for what it does, cleared by Hazards, with ES and TR being far more effective in doing the same thing and a whole lot more. Meanwhile, Kirks continue to fly cruisers in Queues doing sweet f-all in with BFAW on their own and being easy pickings for multiple GW spamage, yellowstone, theta and epw spam. Enough. This makes cruisers far more useful in the meta than silly things like token cruiser command abilities. They'll make cruisers powerful for sure, and BFAW needs to be nerfed, but they'll still be slow, Sci's will still be able to spam GW's faster than the CD's on the Pulse and more competition against the other high level engineering BO abilities would be a good thing.
Viral Matrix
- Now disable singularity powers (for the same duration as subsystems) as well as disable or confuse pet's and adds 5-15 second CD's to universal console abilities and cloaking devices (lol) depending on aux-power and rank.
VM needs a bit of modernisation in the land of Rom, Spam and human doffs. Instead of messing with the duration, it should do a little more, be a little more chaotic whilst being a worth while skill in the land where sci abilities seem to focus on AOE CC with little scope for discrimination.
Viral Matrix now behaves more like it should, permeating more of the abilities and systems of a ship, meanwhile making those with all those free abilities that have pissed us off so much a little more vulnerable, and facing increased opportunity cost.
New Tac Abilities.
Something that emulates CRF for beams. - And Ensign to LT Comm ability.
An ability that synergies energy weapons and torpedo's without requiring shield facings to be exposed. It essentially provides torpedoes that hit your target during the ability, when your cannons or beam weapons are firing, transphasic properties, with much increased shield penetration, shield damage and accuracy. It's a debuff that needs energy weapons and torpedoes, scales with weapons power and isn't cleared by TT.
The abilities listed above are fine the way they are. Anymore they probably could become more powerful. I experimented a little with them so I'm not just pulling this one out of my behind (except tachyon of course).
The trick is to use them and stack your starship with other similar abilities. I'll use tachyon as an example. This ability has a doff that grants the ability to slow people down. On its own, it doesn't do much. So imagine if you spam the area of control with chroniton mines, tractor beam mines, tachyon with doff, warp plasma, theta radiation, yellow runabout etc... Just making sure you can lock someone down and do it with an evil grin.
You can do the same with aceton beam. The hazard doff makes AB drains energy from the victim's subsystems. All of them. You can complement AB beam with polaron weapons, energy siphon, target subsystem and even viral matrix. Just to make sure you can shut someone down and do it with an evil grin.
Oh, I do all of this already, the problem is you have too many competiting skills trying to do the same things, even with stacking, somethings going to miss out - the alterntives I've proposed tend not to just make the skills better, but different - as well as solving other pvp problems.
