    I think buying the eng Kumari variant alone would be the best advice.... I find her Bo setup better then the Defaint ones.
    The consoles of both are kind of obsolete unless you pvp so....

    I like the fleet defiant personally. fleet Prometheus and fleet patrol are pretty cool also.

    but a hec with pets I would have thought dealt pretty decent dps

    For a decent Eng ship, it's hard to beat the versatility you can get from an Oddy.

    The Andorian Escorts are glass cannons. Huge damage, very little survivability, especially for Tac Officers. Defiant offers a bit more survivability for the cost of a little dps reduction.

    I have the Fleet Defiant and I usually win 1v1 pvp matches against my friends Kumari. Both are loaded out to be as close as possible so that gear can't be blamed.

    defiant has 3 tact boff slots (something I personally cant stand, 3 of any same boff type) Both the defiant and the Tact Kumari have 5 tact consoles, but I prefer the 5 front weapon option on the Kumari. I'd highly suggest getting a - threat console though.

    People like to say the Kumari is a glass cannon, but that describes just about any escort...its how you build it as to how strong your defense is...
