Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
To me it looks like a Miranda Configuration of a Vesta. It looks interesting, only thing I would change is the JJPrize Warp Nacelles and get rid of that lower ring.
But we know Cryptic made it clear they aren't going to add fanmade designs. Not even the other winners of the DTNE got their ships into the game.
Actually, that's not true. The Chimera was based on one of the entries, as was the Regent.
Good questions and I may not have great answers for all of them.
1) From an aesthetic POV, during the design process I was coming up with various types configurations for the nacelles, I wanted something that would be a departure from the regular body plan and one of the designs was vulcan-ish almost by accident - that then influenced the RP.
From an RP POV - well, what are the Vulcans doing right now? They're probably intensely fascinated by the possibilities and problems caused by the resurgence of the Iconians, painting them back into the picture somehow with some sort of active role seemed fitting, given Tuvoks return.
2) The name represents the role and ship as well as starfleets mood towards the Iconians. Other names floating around for this vessel (or possibly sister vessels) included USS Boxer, USS Wage, USS Eccentric and USS Vagrant. This ship was designed to operate in deepspace, beyond the reach of subspace relays, in some way outside the sphere of the federation its self. But unlike deep space exploration missions, it's remit is pretty clear ...
3) Think of this class as a first responder, find the assets, secure the assets, wait for reinforcements. Given all recent Iconian contact has been of a hostile nature, the ship unfortunately assumes a more aggressive stance than you would expect from a pure exploration team. Although a few experts are on board, given the vastness of iconian relics, these personnel are probably too valuable to be risked en masse on the first phase of contact.
Wow, thanks for the added info. Like I said, looking at the images and reading your write up just captured my attention enough that I had more questions.
I really dig the development story you've put into this ship. Great work through and through.
Well, that's certainly the most unique statement of approval I've seen in a while. Unless sarcastic.
lol no, not sarcasm. I really like the lines, and really want to plow it through a borg cube while saying "assimilate this" or something similarly cheesy.

I actually like this. The ship's design is very sleek as though the hull was specifically design to make travel easier. An example would be a hull form that ride the solar winds or something.
But, imagine if this ship's hull was designed like what priestofsin suggested: a hull designed specifically for ramming! Like those old Greek ships. Say that the hull is shaped that way because it better amplifies the Structural Integrity field of the ship, thus transforming the ship itself to a sublight kinetic penetrator against capital ships?

Stop it, you're making me need this ship. OP! Give your model to the Armada III guys! I desire a ramming ship.

That's what I was referring to. Outside those 2, we really haven't seen the others. I mean everyone loved Madden's Declaration-class to the point they gave her honorable mention.
But still, Cryptic said they aren't going to add fanmade designs. Which is ashame, some of those DTNE winners continue to make some really awesome ship designs that I would love to see in STO. They retain the classic Star Trek feel than the alien designs that Cryptic has been pushing out.

Honestly, I could really see the Klingons doing this... I mean I could REALLY see the Klingons doing this.
Design a ship specifically for "It's a good day to die!" protocols, with Klingon-style ram and enhanced self-destruction ability. Fight normally, but when the ship is critically damaged, oh boy. It could even be designed to ram... and survive.

Technically, the DTNE designs don't count the same way. If they really counted as "fan-made designs" the way you're saying, they wouldn't have even been able to use the designs they did for the Chimera and the Regent. They *can* use the rest from that contest, but it's more a matter of if they choose to.
I find it interesting that people aren't complaining about the ring like previous fan designs that came before it.
I think the difference is because it's not being presented as an Enterprise. That was most likely a deciding factor in how people responded to the designs for the DTNE contest.
That's a really nice design the OP came up with, and I'm not easy to impress on Starfleet designs
Although I would classify it as a light cruiser and not a pew-pew escort. But Cryptic's designs pale in comparision

"No. Men do not roar. Women roar. Then they hurl heavy objects... and claw at you." -Worf, son of Mogh
"A filthy, mangy beast, but in its bony breast beat the heart of a warrior" - "faithful" (...) "but ever-ready to follow the call of the wild." - Martok, about a Targ
"That pig smelled horrid. A sweet-sour, extremely pungent odor. I showered and showered, and it took me a week to get rid of it!" - Robert Justman, appreciating Emmy-Lou
However, the secondary deflector array made me think that it would have some kind of science capabilities.
I'd be happy with either, it's more the Commander Engineer in an escort hull that was the original motivation for the design.
The secondary deflector was a specific request from a friend who thought they where super cool, given it's a long range ship I guess it kind of fits too. :P
That looks Awesome, looks like a science cruiser Vulcan/Human Hybrid IMO.
Great Job.
Wow, totally seeing the D'kyr+Fed influence there. That is a terrific looking ship! I normally dislike the delta-shaped saucers, but I really like that one. [Though I wonder if you might be willing to add a 'rounder' saucer variant (along the lines of the Oslo or the Luna].
Great work - I hope Cryptic takes up this design - and compensates you somehow!
Please reconsider ARC. Please make it optional, at the least. PLEASE.
It seems the vast majority of your most active players (forum regulars) hate the idea... and while that's a small subset of the playerbase, I think it's an important constituency.
THE PLAYERS DO NOT WANT THIS.
Dude that is so sweet! That would be an awesome ship to bring into the game. *HINT* It looks more like how starfleet would adapt solanae technology and wrap it in a starfleet hull
While I wouldn't want it as an Enterprise (the same goes the Akira class, which is a fave of mine), it's a beautiful design. Really do love the nacelle and pylon assembly and wouldn't mind seeing that on future non-Enterprise ships.
My only negative is that I'm not fond of the saucer section, but then I've never liked the wedge shaped saucers.
Got to add that you're other ship designs in your gallery are also excellent.

Yes please I would love to see that in and around ESD
Does it come in black?
Seriously I think that's a marvelous piece of work. Continue!
Seems we have a similar taste. Yes, Avenger is also ugly, but the Dyson destroyer is a whole new level of ugliness...
