Absolutely love this game but everywhere I'm finding redundant places (Memory Alpha) and people (pretty much anyone that sells personal or ship related products) and mainly it's down to two causes -The Exchange and the huge amount of loot that drops in every single battle (no lie but I practically fitted out an entire away team with tier XI equipment during one single mission)
Well, I for one have somewhat of the opposite happen to me which seems to have started when I reached Rear Admiral lower half (currently maxed out a Vice Admiral). While I get decent loot drops for ground missions, I get awful drops in space missions. Loot is rarely above Mk IV and I received countless Mk I and II loot. In away that's good I suppose 'cause I am very close to the 10 mil EC cap. The only reason why I have Mk XI or XII weapons / equipment is because I bought them through the exchange. In away I kill two birds with one stone I suppose: 1) I get the equipment that I want (for the most part since many Mk II stuff is ludicrously overpriced) and 2) I stay under the 10 mil EC cap so I can at least still earn EC.
I have started a 2nd game last week just to try something different but my 1st character is still my primary game. I have yet to complete the main story since I basically stopped doing it back when I was a Lt. Commander. Since my 1st character is a male human in Starfleet, I decided to make a female Klingon for the KDF. I didn't do Romulan because I read that two thirds into the storyline the Romulans would need to decide if they should side with the Federation or ally with the Klingons. At that point the Romulans would do the Federation / KDF missions depending on who you end up choosing. I suppose I will flip a coin to determine the gender for my future Romulan character.
Personally, I think whats wrong with the game is lock boxes. Besides being bottomless money pits that cost a thousand times more than they are worth, they kill a lot of ideas for future content.
One example is the Cardassian lock box, Theres a lot of people who would have liked to seen Cardassians as a playable faction but considering their Galor class ship has already been grabbed up as a lock box ship, it'll never happen. Then theres Jem'Hadar, that was picked clean too for the sake of lock boxes. Lets see, whats left, maybe a playable Voth faction of some sort in the future? oh wait, too late, they were picked clean as well. This is no longer Star Trek Online, it has been updated to Lock Box Online, where everything comes from a lock box.

....this is news to you? Lock Boxes have been their main money maker since they were introduced

Not quite right. While it's true you do have to pick a side, that doesn't mean the end of new Romuilan content. The Romulans have a pretty good storyline that will take you to Level 50 on it alone; you don't have to do any of the joint missions unless you really want to or need the expertise.
(The Nimbus missions are Romulan missions that KDF and Feds can do, not the other way around.)
Trying to make that sound like a good thing should really make you question how bad off the game is.
Oh, I am not trying to make it sound like a good thing (I HATE lockboxes and think they are gambling devices that are technically not allowed (access to minors, etc) but are because it is an MMO), i was just pointing out that they are focusing on them because it is the main way they make money
As it's been stated, the real work begins at 50. Leveling up is just an extended tutorial. Once you hit 50, you'll need to start grinding STFs. Not elites, normals. Once you have those down, and a ship with SOME SORT of synergy and a coherent build, then you need to start on elites. Once you're good at doing elites, you'll need to grind your brains out to hit tier 5 and complete rep sets. Once you're done with that, it's now time to join a good fleet and start the grind for fleet gear. While you're getting the rest of your fleet gear, it's now time to level up Nukara and New Romulus reps for the various bits and bobs that they contain. Item drops are nothing but vendor trash, with the occasional thing worth selling on the exchange. If anything, this game doesn't drop enough loot... probably one out of 1000 drops is anything half-way decent, and I can count the number of Antiproton Mag Regulators Mk XI Very Rare that I've gotten in my year of playing on one hand.

With all due respect to your opinion, there is absolutely no need to follow those "rules".
You make it sound like there's a step by step, ladder progression and there isn't. If you want to join a fleet, then join a fleet. Why would you join a fleet only after doing Omega Force rep? If you only have one character, the way to go is precisely doing every rep at the same time. Actually, it's always a good idea to do them all at once, even if you have multiple characters. The only drawback is that you probably won't have the time and you'll get bored of keep repeating stuff. Example: Crystalline -> STF -> Azure Nebula -> Dyson Battlezone. Again, and again...boring...
And although I agree that you should do a few normal STF's before going to Elite, it's only so that you can learn how it's done, it's mechanics. Nothing more. As soon as you know what you are doing and you have a moderate build, go ahead and do elite. Teams can do so much damage, so fast nowadays that it doesn't matter if one of the team members only does 2000 dps and dies two or thee times. In the statistically improbable that most of the team is composed by undeperforming players, it's no big deal. It's once or twice in many, many STF's. Moreover, if you do Elite you will get way better equipped and become a much more valid member of the team much faster. Just don't join the more demanding ones not to ruin other people's game.

that's funny cos I purchased 10 keys and ended up getting items greater in value then the cost of the keys and though none of them were breathtakingly great they all would have cost more if I purchased them on the c-store, and no I never got a ship.
having said that I haven't been inclined to buy any more.
yet.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

I don't see anything "wrong" in your observations it's (GRAMMAR EDITT!!!) just that I'm not sure if they're of what's "wrong" with the game.
How'd you miss the lockbox thing?
