Strange event in an open battle ground.

I was in an open battleground when I was attacked. I counter attacked and in a large explosion I was notified that my enemy's warp core explosion had damaged my ship. I was ok. Just had to repair. He was gone. So I assume that I destroyed him.

Here is the problem. When he came back I could no longer target him. He did not make the mistake of attacking me but I had tasted blood for the first time. This was my first warzone and my first kill and I wanted more.

So how did he do that? I have found no way to toggle pvp on and off. What am I missing? I am still very new.

I don't know whether this is what happened, but there is a console in the current Hirogen lock box that makes your ship simulate a warp core breach, which enemy ships see as genuine, as a distraction to help you escape and ambush them.

It does sound like the Alpha Deception Field console, found in the Hirogen Lockbox.
