how does a thread become popular? I have seen one with like 20 replies and over a 100 views but yet a thread with only 3 replies and less than 30 views is labeled as popular. I do not understand this logic.

    Depends on the subject matter I guess. Some stir more debate than others.

    Well, if you have a few stubborn posters disagreeing with eachother, that's guaranteed to give extra volume to a thread.

    Or could be a topic where everybody thinks they have something smart to add.

    See, for example this one does have potential, but the title isn't catchy enough :)
