<Beep, Beep, Beep>
Michael Li woken up to the sound of his alarm going off, the sleepy Starfleet officer grimacing as he slowly got out of bed. Half awake, he slowly made his way to his personal washroom, or more traditionally called the "head." After taking a quick sonic shower and brushed his teeth, he stared in the mirror at his face.
It only seemed like yesterday that he was still a lowly ensign aboard the Miranda-class starship USS Resilience. Li still remembered that fateful day, it was his first assignment after all. What was supposed to be a short patrol within Federation space, with the old Miranda-class starship carrying many ensigns fresh out of the academy, they had to respond to the distress call from the Vega system, where the Borg made a sudden attack on the well-established Federation colony. Li led a small assault team that was beamed onto the Noble-class starship Khitomer. By sheer stroke of fate, Li was still aboard the Khitomer, repelling Borg drones attempting to board the big starshipship, when the Borg suddenly attacked the Resilience, wiping out everyone senior of Li. When returned to the ship, he was forced to take command of the badly damaged ship. He shook those dark thoughts as he got out of the washroom to the personal replicator in his room. He ordered an old fashioned English-style breakfast, loaded with bacon, sausages, the works, along with a cup of raktajino. Klingon or not, the very strong coffee, similar to Cuppuccino, was still popular within the Federation as a source of caffeine.
As he ate breakfast in his quarters, he read the various reports complied into his personal PADD, reviewing the assignments usually done by the lower ranks. He grimaced as he read the failure report for the shipboard concert, with several crew members requesting therapy to deal with the traumatic music played. Whoever thought playing music from some 21st Century, obscure boyish pop musician (Beaver? Beaker?) was a good idea should be sent to the brig. On the other hand, it seemed the crew was coping well with the addition of defectors from the Klingon empire and their allies. While there were concerns about Gorn and Female Orions wrecking havoc on the ship's crew, they performed their duties with admirable professionalism and had built up a rapport with the rest of their crewmates. Of course, the recent addition of Hirogen and Voth defectors, including a Voth scientist named Nelen Exil, had been a bit of complication for the crew.
After finishing breakfast and some morning intelligence briefs, Li went to change into his uniform. With the deregulation of uniform standards, many starfleet officers donned a variety of clothes, ranging from current standard issue uniforms up to stuff worn back in the 22nd Century and earlier. In Li's case, he decided to don a variant of the uniform from the late 24th Century. Though some might see it as a bit dull and even militaristic with the dominant black and greys, and its association with the Dominion Wars, it was a rather comfortable uniform to wear, and it heralded to the days of the USS Enterprise-E, a much older sister ship to Li's current vessel. The main alteration to the uniform was the fleet emblem patch on his left upper arm, a grey circular disc with a red 11-point Maple Leaf in the centre.
These days, Starfleet organized ships into squadrons, with vessels of different sizes and purposes, pooling together resources, crew members, and even equipment. Each squadrons were led by a small team of senior officers from the Command division; three or four ships would be active on various assignments across the Federation, with inactive ships being sent to various drydocks and shipyards for maintenance or storage. In Li's case, he was the senior most officer of his sqaudron, and being a flag officer, he had dibs on which ships to take. These days, he often picked between two ships. For situations needing extreme firepower, he would switch over to the Prometheus-class starship USS Haida, a light battleship in all but name, armed with a rather non-standard loadout of energy weapons and a special turret plus quantum torpedoes. For general operations, though, this ship was his usual choice.
As Li walked down the corridors, he made a brief detour to the ship's lounge, dubbed "Eleven-Forward" in honour of the infamous "Ten-Forward" lounge aboard the USS Enterprise-D. As it so happened, the senior bartender was currently training one of newer additions to the crew, who had joined up after Li called in some favours. Personally, it was a bit strange to realize that the new El-Aurian bartender was older than most of the people aboard, having been one of those rescued from the Nexus by the USS Enterprise-B. Li's rationale for getting Rulian Mazan assigned to the ship was to help the crew have another person to talk to. With all due respect to the ship's counsellor, Li found that the crew sometimes preferred talking to folks like the chefs and bartenders, especially after a drink or a good meal. An El-Aurian Bartender was even better, with Rulian holding hundreds of years worth of experience and seemed to instinctively know how to get people to open up about their personal issues. Even Li had taken time to chat with Rulian on personal matters and how to handle the responsibility of taking care of his ships and crews.
After chatting for a while with the bartenders, he soon made his way towards the Bridge.
"Admiral on the Bridge," shouted the Andorian sitting at the Captain's chair, causing Li to grimace inwardly. He really didn't care much for his current rank, and had long feared a desk assignment. Fortunately though, it seemed that Starfleet's need for ships out in space meant that Vice Admirals like himself still continued to command ships and weren't stuck behind desks doing piles of paperwork. Li soon made his way to his seat, with his Andorian first officer looking like she needed a rest.
Captain Tarah Ovlam had been one of Li's oldest friends and colleagues. Born in the city of Iqaluit, Nunavut, Tarah, like many Andorians who settled in the northern parts of Canada, were raised up in a more human culture than their predecessors, most adopting Canadian culture and attitudes. While autonomous nation states were gone by the 25th Century, Earth still had multiple governments on a "national" level, all under the United Earth Government, which itself was under the Federation's Government. In North America, there were still separate national-level governments for the regions of Canada, the United States, and Mexico, though all followed the same Federation Laws.
Even in the 25th Century, many people still kept the cultures and identity of their respective nations, and those in the nation of Canada were no different. Ice hockey was still a part of Canadian culture, and indeed many Andorians had taken to the sport like fish to water. Played on ice with rough gameplay, it was almost like the ideal Andorian sport.
Li nodded to Tarah, who smiled slightly and looked relieved, as she finished her shift as First Officer and moved to the nearby turbolift. Li slowly sat down, watching as the viewscreen showed the outside view. He looked around the bridge and looked at the red and white flag that lazily hung from the rafters of the bridge. It wasn't exactly regulation, but many among the crew urged him to allow it, as part of the tribute to the ship's namesake. After sitting and reviewing reports from throughout the ship, Li left he seat and went to look at the Dedication Plaque of the Ship:
