I've got this KDF tactical character and I'd like to get a fancier ship. I've been using the Qin Heavy Raptor so far and it's a nice ship, but I think it's time for a change. I checked the wiki for ships the KDF can use and I've narrowed the list to just 2 ships: Tal Shiar Adapted Destroyer and Krenn Temporal Destroyer. Since they're both very expensive for me, I'd like to know the pros and cons of each before I commit to buying one of them. I am also open to other suggestions, but Birds of Prey are pretty much out of the question since they are too squishy for me. Same goes for any ship that I deem ugly :P As you can see, looks are equally important for me, which brings me to my next question.
I'd like to get the Fleet, Mine and Spire outfits for this character as well, but the fleet I'm in doesn't have access to them yet. Is it possible to buy them if someone invites me in the respective instance of their fleet starbase/mine/spire (assuming they are unlocked of course). I'd rather not leave my fleet, so I'm looking at alternatives.
Thanks in advance for reading and, hopefully, providing some answers/feedback.
The Mogh is a fun ship to fly; it has plenty of firepower, survivability, and maneuverability to handle any situation. You can also get a fleet version of it, if you don't want to buy the C-store version.
The TS Adapted Destroyer is very formidable as well, although its built-in console is not as useful as the Nanite Indoctrination console on the TS ABC. I don't have any insight on the Krenn ship, never touched one.
You won't need to leave your fleet to buy any of the fleet outfits, you just need an invite to a starbase/mine/spire with the tailor unlocked. You only need to switch fleets to buy a fleet ship.
Join the Nerds of Prey (NoP) Public Service channel ingame to ask for an invite to a suitable fleet location (base/spire/mine); you may need to be patient, if someone is not on hand who can accommodate. And of course, always be polite.
I have a KDF Tac who flies the MU Qin. Properly kitted out it can be surprisingly sturdy in PvE and STFs. I've never flown it in PvP. I have a BoP for that.
The Mogh rocks. Period. Get one and you'll not be sorry one bit.
A six year old boy and his starship. Living the dream.
if you have dil or zen, the gurumba is similar enough to those to be worth a mention. In siege mode, it turns a little slow but the power... ah the power.... you can sit at 110+ weapon power with every slot firing constantly in introductory level gear, and the death star weapon (built into the ship) can approach 100k hits under ideal circumstances (30k is fairly normal, 60k+ good crits, and higher with things like alpha strike, debuffs, more). However it is tac heavy and not a sci/tac ship.
Another interesting ship might be the karfi carrier. With 2 bays full of dps frigates and a heavy science / tactical setup, it is one of the best ships in the game. Its ONLY drawback is the low turn rate, and its turn rate is BETTER than any other 2 bay carrier. Um, you might think this one is ugly, it looks like the offspring from a lobster married to a helicopter gunship.
I really like the looks of that TSA destroyer, but I do not have one. It should perform quite well, however, I cant see anything that it has that is enough superior to other choices to justify the costs.
The new Anniversary ship is fun, based on the Mogh it has a lot of sci skills plus tac skills. Fleet raptor is nice and with some rep passives it can be a decent pseudo vaper also. In a Borg RA last night I one-shotted a cube on an alpha.
Hey I Used to be Captain Data, well I guess I still am in game but the account link really screwed everything up
The Mogh Battle Cruiser looks pretty interesting, but the turn rate seems pretty low. I'm mostly interested in mounting some DHC and turrets on my ships so I can pew pew so not sure if the Mogh would work that well like that. Some kind of RCS console should help with the turn rate I guess.

RCS ... Not so much ... As it only gives a % increase on BASE turn rate, so 35% of diddly squat is ... wait, let me do the math ... erm ... diddly squat!
You can put points into Inertial Damp. Sjill to improve Turn rate, and use an Impulse engine with [Turn] and keep the slots for tanking consoles.
I have a Vorcha on a Tac Captain and running Max level on Inertial Damp. and Blue [Spd][Turn] IE, I can stay broadside to an NPC BoP for about 4 revolutions, before it moves out of the front firing arc at full impulse, without using an Attack Pattern buff or Maneuvering Thrusters buff, If I drop to 1/4 impulse I can tighten the turn up more and pull it back in for another chase on the Broadside Merry-go-Round. Or use one of the attack pattern buffs/Thrusters buff.
The Mogh would be a bit different though, as it's 5 For'd Weaps. would suggest a cannon build, and I've never tried that ...

Turn rate can only be improved a little bit and at great cost... you need your consoles for other things. You can try, but in the long run, you probably want a faster ship for DHC.
Of note: you can buy a turn rate captain trait; I got one out of a lockbox.
For reference I played around with turn rate boosting on my carrier (5 or 6 or something awful turn base). I got it up to over 16 but that was with 3 blue turn rate consoles and the captain trait... In practice, it sits at about 10 or 11 with 'real' consoles. A mogh is better than that and would have a 15 or so "practical" rate. This is good enough for a lot of pve -- borg gate blasting and cube killin, but against faster targets like voth it is difficult to stay aimed with DHC. And forget pvp with cannons on a cow.
I still say gurumba for pew-pew or a BOP maybe? Its hard to beat a BOP, you can do *anything* with the officers. Very squishy, but in the right hands....
If he wants to do "pew pew" he can only use raptors or bird of preys. Anything else, at least for the klingon side, its too slow talking about turning rates. And as they said, if you using a big battle cruiser, you will need consoles for anything else, it is a waste to have those slots filled with turning rate consoles. Conclusion, if you want a fast ship in all terms, use a bird of prey or a raptor for second choice. I love bird of preys, since they tend to have all universal consoles in most of the cases, and the speed and inertia is awesome, i can kill really big battle cruisers just doing hit and run and i can even stay in the tail of my enemy all the time if i want lol. That is what i love about bops. Raptors are great for tactical captains as well, but they are slow compared with bops, but its a clear second choice for a klingon tac.

Eh, IMHO you can use cannons on anything with a 15+ turn for PVE. PVP, the opponent moves out of your fire a bit more intelligently. So IMHO all the destroyer class ships qualify for a pew-pew DHC ship. And of course a variety of box and lobi ships that are more or less equal to the raptors and destroyers.
I looked at the Mogh ship, since a few recommended it, and I do like its look, but it's a battlecruiser and I'm not looking to buy one at the moment. I'm used to piloting escorts and that's what I will be buying. But none of the standard Klingon ships appeals to me. Either the stats or the looks are just not for me. So I'll stick to getting either the Tal Shiar Adapted Destroyer or the Krenn Temporal Destroyer.
Many thanks for the replies so far, and especially the one recommending the NoP channel. I was able to get all fleet outfits and discovered that I can customize my Marauder Bridge Officer with the miner outfit (conveniently enough, I like it a lot)!

Either of those will serve you well, just comes down to what you want, different officer and console layouts, or the graphic/cosmetic appeal of one or the other. Pretty big differences in the officers....

Here's the NoP thread with all the details: http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=876281
Give it a read and make sure you read the links in the OP there. It's a great channel, can get everything you need there.
