A use for un-needed BOFFs? Thoughts.

hatepwehatepwe Member Posts: 252 Arc User
I was wondering if anyone else has a few hundred unused BOFFs on both sides or if it's just me.

Between DOFF assignments and leveling and special rewards I have far more than I will ever need. That being said, it's barely worth it to take the time to list them on the exchange or trade them to other people.

I was wondering if Cryptic has plans with the (hopefully soon to come) Crafting revamp or additions/expansions to the DOFF system that might utilize these BOFFs. What about the rest of you players, any thoughts?

Here's some things I was thinking:

A. BOFFs are reassigned to a location for Commendation credit, depending on their profession and the assignment. A Science officer could be sent on two different DOFF assignments, Assist Terraforming or Manage Medical Reflief Efforts. One would give Colonial and Science XP the other Colonial and Medical XP. Assignments could offer more rewards based on the number of BOFFs needed.

B. A Borg Faction. Think Monster play in the Delta quadrant. They don't level up by doing story missions, they level up through combat and assimilation. The DOFF assignments would all revolve around Assimilating various BOFFs (which you could buy or send to the BORG character from another character) assimilating them applies their skills to relevant Commendation pools and gives you XP. Eventually this allows you to upgrade your ships etc. You could do Queue Events to raid outlying parts of the Federation, etc.

C. BOFFs could be sacrificed as disposable beam in back-up in missions (essentially use BOFFs that are in your inventory as devices).

What other ways could these be used?

    I have the same problem.

Yesterday I dumped them all into the exchange.... and made surprisingly lot of money.... I probably sold em to cheap....

However... in the STO wiki I read that the can somehow be tradet/invested for fleet credit (or better said: in the list of stuff that brings fleet credits green and purple candidates are listed) but I have never seen a project requiring them....

we used to be able to throw them out the airlock for dilthume but cryptic decided they didn't like that.

    1. Make them killable in ground missions.
    - introduce a new difficulty slider so you can decide BOFFs could be killed up to whites, greens etc.,
with slightly increased loot. The same could be applied to DOFFs.
    - In ground missions, if an officer is defeated, you have a limited amount of time to revive him, else
he/she dies and gets the name /rank, date of death etc.) on a memorial plaque on the bridge.

    2. Make them killable in space battles.
    - Each time your ship is destroyed, there's a chance of killing one/more bridge officers and/or duty
    officers. Also adjustable per slider.

    3. Introduce "Admiral's gameplay".
    - You level up to lvl 50 as a Captain, then you have to decide to stay a Captain, or become an Admiral.
As an Admiral, your char can't command a ship anymore, instead he commands several ships,
maybe similar to DOFF system, and send them to missions.
As ships of your flottilla/fleet, ships already in your possession could be used, and you have to equip
each of them with gear and BOFFs.

I tend to sell purple ones if they have sought after abilities or traits. Green and blue ones however are worth nothing so I just dismiss them.

I usually just degrind my unneeded blues and greens into whites, and use them either for starbase fodder or sell them on the exchange.

I would like to be able to give them their own command. Basically give them one of my old ships, and get a clicky that I can activate at 50% health similar to Fleet Support, that has my former bridge officer show up to lend a hand. I.e. Kirk/Chang/Sulu in ST6.

I've always thought STO needs to include some sort of a "Redshirt" factor being a Star Trek game.

I am hoping that when/if they raise the level cap they will give us the option to form our own personal fleet of ships using both our own ships as well as bridge officers for the system. You have to staff the ships with beidge officers, as well as have a ship itself and gear for the ship. Bascially making the fleet like having a space version of bridge officers.

It would also be cool if they gave you the option to play as some of the bridge officers, as for some away missions it is really silly that the captain always beams down. I mean, are we all like Kirk, who had to beam down on ever away mission just because he could not stand to miss out on anything? I remember an epidose of TOS where they were testing a computer that could fly a ship, and the guy in charge of the computer's test asked Kirk who needed to be in the away team for a geological mission. He said himself, and some sciencey officers. The computer didn't include kirk in the away team and when asked why the compauter bascially said he did not need to be there. There are lots of away missions that I am forced to go on that, if given the option, I would just send my first officer down with an away team and not go myself.

There's a large variety of ways to even make it favorable to play some of the bridge officers, either by requiring it to "level" them up, or they have less abilities than you typically do (the charactor is weaker) and finishing the mission gives you a larger bonus to either xp, or loot, or something...(like a hard mode version of it).

dunno whats so wrong with detaching your emotions from a boff and trade in for a better one. my main has all but 2 or the special boffs, EMH and ETH. if its possible i want to trade out my white nausicaan boff for a very rare, but i dunno where to get one for the fed side.

    1)Discard for Dil, like DoFF's
    2)Use as DoFF's/Fleet Starbase fodder
3)'Donate' to Starfleet/KDF/RR as "Instructors" when they reach Cmdr for EC/\Lobi/\GPL/\Dil/\Omega Rep

I doubt they will ever give us Dil for BO's.

But I certainly can see them adding BO's to some Insurmountable-For-Small-Fleets Starbase Project. Anything players consider "useless" will end up there.

I'd pretty much forgotten about the possible Fleet Admiral gameplay aspects...

Odds are though, by the time they make that available STO2 will be in design or Star Citizen will be taking all my time and I won't care anymore :P

Making them into DOs is also a good thought that I recall being bounced around a long time ago when Heretic was still a dev...

Weeelll ... They give us Dil and EC for DoFF's and there as common as ... well ...

So even if it was the same trade in value as a Purple DoFF, it would be something ...

Or "convert" them to DoFF's, they would loose their BO abilities, but keep there "Colour and traits" and you could then just specify if they are going to be a "Assault Squad Officer" or whatever (within there field)

That or, as I mentioned, once they reach Cmdr level ... Use them for Rep Projects ... If you think about it, it fits in story wise, that if this BoFF has been with you, they have no doubt picked up some skills, so If you want to "promote" them to the Omega Squad, you are doing them a huge favour ...
Oh, hoho hohhhhh, Oh,, hoho, hohhhhh

Where'd you get a white one on the fed side? I know you can get a purple BOff from the opposing side when you level out in diplomatic points, but...

Regardless, since you can train whatever skills you want to them, why does the color matter?
