Who ends up doing the late night server restarts?

opo98opo98 Member Posts: 435 Arc User
I'm glad Cryptic actually has someone up at ungodly hours of the night to fix the server.

Question is... who would DO that job?

Seriously, bravo to the IT people that don't need sleep.

The Network Operations team, the Production team, Stephen D'Angelo, myself (for communication), and others. All of us have been all hands on deck all day since we started the Season 8.5 patch this morning at 6AM PST :)

    Cheers,

None at the moment. Water only (and milk for cereal) until after the wedding :)

Oh, I'm home now. Just finishing a few things and will be heading in-game, actually :) Didn't get a chance to play today yet.

    Cheers,

Somehow, I don't feel this is nice for those involved. Like "I'm glad you guys didn't sleep this night" :D

You'd be surprised. Though the following doesn't detract from how grateful we all are, (Especially myself, and you since you made this post to emphasize it.) from my own experiences working online, having a ton of employees working online under me, and the general availability of those who's majority of their work -is- online and other factors such as schooling out of the way, the hours said people work are often sporadic, by necessity. Sleeping time is whenever we* are done making things stable enough to leave alone and attend to ensuring our own mentalities are refreshed enough for a new onslaught. Day and night become relative terms unless your room has a window. They are also more likely to spend 3 days straight awake and caffeinated when the proverbial waste extraction unit is accidentally rerouted to the central fan supplying airflow from life-support. Truly remarkably strong-willed and selflessly sacrificial people are the only true fits to maintain such a burden and still remain functional.

I suppose if anything my own experiences make me appreciate such staff even more, whether they were my own back when I had a job maintaining / running a couple game servers, or whether they are the ones keeping one of the few recreational activities I find enjoyable going, those whom I've described have my appreciation, gratitude and reverence.

Be well, sleep well, fight well, live long.

Great that these things get attended to quick smart.

But, is Cryptic learning from these mistakes to prevent these false starts happening again?

Can't help but wonder how much of this can be avoided if they did a dummy roll out on tribble or red shirt (for only cryptic to test) to make sure these constant false starts don't happen.

Probably nothing, as it was a network issue.

I've pulled a few long IT repair shifts like that before. Nothing as dramatic as yours, just a newspaper, a factory, and some bank branches, but I can appreciate what you must go through, and I thank you for the effort.

Also, don't know how you get by on just water. More power to ya. I had to use Mountain Dew, coffee, and those little energy shot drinks.

All other sectors of work have had socialist and liberal revolutions in the 19th century about their work hours and conditions. But IT did not exist back then so the 14+ hour workday still exists and is called thursday.

As to getting by without caffeine, look up how caffeine and adenosine work. Short summary: caffeine only works for sporadic boosts, any structural usage is compensated by the brain to non-caffeine levels (brain makes more adenosine and more receptors).

    B) In-game now :) Just finished a playthrough of A Step Between Stars, and now am having fun just swapping ships and taking my personal fleet out for a spin.
