Step Between Stars - Saving the Captain

So on my second playthrough, I decided to see if the captain can be saved from the cloaked Voth sniper. I put up a Cover Shield across the doorway and then initiated the conversation.

Turns out, you CAN save him. Of course, because the game requires his death to proceed and his death is not actually scripted but the result of a standard attack, it breaks mission progress, but I had a good chuckle about that. :P
The universe has a wonderful sense of humor. The trick is learning how to take a joke.

    Captain? Cloaked Voth sniper? A step between stars is the one with Tuvok, yes? If so, you encountered a part I didn't.

    I have seen at least 3 different versions of the mission.
    Normal, with captain getting shot and with the 'sun-room' where you must get behind the pilars.

    I've done it once and gotten the pillars...

    The mission plays through differently each time, possibly depending on faction, and on some of the conversation choices.

    According to Al Rivera on Priority One podcast, there are several random sequences in how th e mission works out.
    New home of the Romulan Republic.
    I have an idea for what Season 11 should be; Season 11: The Big Bug Fix.

    I gotta admit that is a nice touch. It also explains why one room I went into had a 'shadow figure' standing to one side from certain angles - probably the captain's spawn point.

    Anyone find out what you need to do to get different EV suits?
    I would love to visit this star in-game...or maybe this one!

    It's been posted elsewhere but to save you time hunting ...

    Pick:
    'no support' to get the Striker suit
    -
    'Beams' to get the Marksman suit
    -
    'Swarmers' to get the Enforcer suit
