Protonic Space weaponry?

I am wondering what people think of these.
Are You having success with them, are they a (good) alternative to other stuff?(plasma/disruptor/antiprotons...)

I am a little bit curious.
I believe I will one of these days throw some dilithium at the Voth Tier unlocks.
Since my curiosity is stronger than 'just get them instantly', I thought I'd ask for Yours experiences in the use of such gunnery.

Are they perhaps just useful for fighting Voths?
I was considering retrofit my Atrox with the Voth equipment.
As it has since release been Tetryon focused (canon, afaik)

Since I don't have any voth ship, I don't have anywhere to put them protons. -in a way.

And cannot spring for Polarized Disruptors which are superior.

But seriously on a Carrier? No... Serious waste of what little DPS an Atrox can manage. For that your best bet is the whole Romulan Plasma set. The beam Array, Torp, and Console. Throw on some other Romulan Plasma and enjoy the carnage.

They're pretty great if you're going for a crit build, or if you have Polarons and want to upgrade. Otherwise? Stick to a different energy type.

Their specialty is that they deal Proton damage 25% of the time they critical hit, so you want high crit with these guys. That said, they work well, they do about as much damage as any beam of the same mark, and they still drain power when they proc, so you're not really losing much except a modifier, which can be argued that you're not losing much for potentially more damage dealt in the long run.

That said, boosting Proton damage is a bit meh, since the only consoles that do so are Tac consoles that provide about half the bonus to energy damage they normally provide (Not half actually, they're on par with those +Beam or +Cannon tac consoles) which isn't bad, and the added Accuracy ain't bad, but if you're one of those 20K DPS OR BUST HURRR folk, these consoles or the beams won't be for you.

OTOH, if you have a crit build and you crit a lot, you've nothing to lose with these.

There's also the matter of visuals (and yes, it's a point for me). They're blue instead of purple, so if you like blue, go for 'em!

Wouldn't bother with them on anything but a raider or a science-heavy escort. A science ship doesn't have enough forward weapon slots to use it without ending up otherwise toothless, and a cruiser doesn't usually have the mobility to stay on target well enough. Battlecruisers could maybe do it (the Kamarag in particular), but don't really have enough sci and tac to fully exploit it, and why spend all that dil if you aren't going to get the most out of it?

He/she could always get 'em for free via Dyson lootboxes. I haven't spent a single dilithium on the plethora of Protonic Polaron DHCs and beam arrays I've gotten.
