In truth, there are still some of the same old issues that I've been bitter about for the better part of two or three year. Still in the five month I've been away I noticed four things:
1) Gravity well reclaim a few of it's lost teeth.
2) Cruiser now have their own set of commands.
3) The last few ships release haven't been purely escort/birds of pray or escort/birds of pray hybrid concepts.
4) The carrier interface isn't as glitchy. Not to say it doesn't have it's share of bugs or "Fly into the light!" fighter AIs.
Which leads me to the conclusion the unofficial title is a little bit less "Escort Online" or the unofficial motto of "I can't believe it's not a escort." All of which is a backhanded complement, but a thank you is owed, so one is given.
actually, stick beams on those escorts and they'll leave those a2b cruisers in the dust.
Not really, Cruisers still have much higher hull and shields. Not to mention +1 weapon slots. An Auxiliary to Battery Cruiser effectively doubles the player's bridge officer count. Not to mention power overcapping and Aux2Bat + EPtX dual chains.

The only thing cruisers have over escorts are the +1 weapon slot. everything else the escorts have covered
escorts can effectively double their tactical officer powers, they can also run 3x SROs for extra critH and CritD.
They can also overcap weapon power better than cruisers since they have +weapon power. they only need to overcap to the hard cap.
they can also chain EPtX, primarily EPtW.
and on top of that they have full aux for extra damage with tier4 nakura.
all of that and they don't have to lock up 3 Doff slots for 1 ability.
an a2b cruiser cannot hold a candle to a properly fitted beamscort.

Beam Escorts set up like cruisers don't have any Engineering Heals, they don't have Directed Energy Modulation III + Marion, they have 10-20% less shielding, they have 10,000-25,000 less hull, they don't have cruiser commands, and they have less power bonuses. In a straight all out duel, a standard Beam Tactical Cruiser is going to cream a standard Beam Escort. Escorts are designed to use Dual Heavy Cannons and tight arc weapons. They are extremely gimped when they run all beams. I've run into Beam Array JHAS before, they are pathetic.

You're thinking PvP, Jena is thinking PvE. There is a difference for max performance in either of them. However there are some happy middle grounds. *glares at scimitar*
I will add one more thank you now that I've had a bit of time to play with the battlegrounds.
I like them.
Previous PvE uncontested rewarded damage, more damage, and even more damage above all else. The power creap has made PvE events like a borg task forces a snap. Where once you had to adhere to the rules as if handed down by God to get the optional? Now you can just zoom in, shoot stuff, and win. If you were a team or support player? Well, that was just too bad for you. In a way, the battleground still support damage dealers the best as support or team players can't stand alone as well. Still it is a quantum leap, and I am pleased with it.

It is through repetition that we learn our weakness.
A master with a stone is better than a novice with a sword.
Has damage got out of control?
This is the last thing I will post.
