Well, the game will launch through Steam, if you consider that a benefit. It'll be easy for you to pick up things like the Steam Starter Pack.

Current plans are for Steam users to not have to use Arc when it launches.

    That's it, really.
You're right. The work here is very important.

Download through Steam and you don't have to get "arc."

steam isn't just a useless program to act as an alternative to arc, it's a great social network and game store.
when you add friends, you'll see when they start playing a game so you can join them.
you can gift games to your friends.
there's a built in chat system that you can access while in-game.
you can take screenshots with steam and upload and share them with your friends, all while in-game.
steam has thousands of games available, and often has ridiculous sales, like 75% off or more.
paid games that hold free play weekends will show up automatically in your library.
you can easily install or uninstall games in you library with one or two clicks. and you dont need to download then install, once you buy a game, you just tell steam to download it and when its done, it's ready to play.
you can also create a group page for your fleet and invite your fleet members.

i don't work for steam, i just really like it. i ran sto through steam even before it was made available on steam so my friends could see what i was playing and join me.

i think the truth is that pwi loves the idea of steam too, but they want people in china to play, and giving them steam would give them too much access to the world, so they had to create their own limited version. that's not really based on anything specific, it's just a thought that popped in my head.

Actually, I should have revealed that I already have the game downloaded and have played for a few months now. Is there any way to reinstall with Steam and not ruin everything like a noob?

well you'll have to uninstall the game thats already on your computer.

then find the game in the steam store (it'll be free) and download it from there.

    Agreed.

And there is the fact that Steam is the more mature of the two, development-wise. That offers some peace of mind, at least for me.

actually i'm pretty sure you can just move your star trek online folder to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common
then when you download through steam, it will see the files and add it to your library without needing to download the whole game again.

This is definitely true. In my first post, I listed only STO-specific advantages.

Steam is great for a whole bunch of non-STO reasons, too. :D

Those of you who have not used Steam before will likely not gain any real benefits from playing STO on it, unless you really want to avoid Arc.

But a lot of people (like me) own many games on Steam, which already has a well integrated community and social platform, and suits regular gamers quite well. We are lucky that STO is among the few MMOs that are included in it.

    I partially disagree.

Just wait until they see one of Steams big sales...

Steam has its own game cards you can buy and use them to acquire stuff for your game.

ARC is PW's Steam-clone wannabe. All the looks, none of the functionality.

It has some of Steam's functionality. You can add non-ARC (that is, non PWE) games on your computer to your ARC library, and there are social aspects and an in-game overlay. But as others have said, ARC now is what Steam was years ago. If you mainly play PWE games, it might work for you. But otherwise, Steam is the superior platform.

yeah you won't see much benefit specific to sto, but you'll soon be needing a bigger hard drive and more time for gaming because when the sale comes, it's really hard to stop yourself from buying all the games you've been wanting.

Steam is a game client that is being used by many large and small game studios and publishers (unlike Arc, because it's PWE... and just PWE).

    Examples of studios & publishers:
    Bethesda
    Valve
    Team 17
    Ubisoft
    Squad
    PWE
    2K
    Re-Logic
    The Behemoth
    Sega

Just as PWE is the parent company of Arcgames.com. Valve is the parent company of Steam.
