How are things going? (for returning gamers)

I have been away from this community for some time - probably coming on 2 years. I used to play this game a lot - mainly because I loved star trek. However, the repetitive missions (kill 5 groups of 5 aliens, scan 3 things, etc) really got to me and I simply didn't find the game fun anymore.

How have things been improved in the last few years? Do you feel as if the community is stronger now? Has there been a surge in players, or have we lost a lot of people?

Just looking for your honest opinions. I am a lifetime member, but I'm not sure I have access to the new Romulan stuff.

Thanks!

The Romulan content is available for free for everyone. The Reman race is locked until you either pay for it (bad idea), or unlock it for free by reaching rank 5 in the Romulan reputation with another character.
Cryptic never made payed content. Every content released so far is free for all, and they said they want to keep it that way.

Lots of things have been added since you left. Fleet and reputation amongst other, but those are basically grind to unlock the best stuff. IE you have several projects, you need to "fuel" with various resources, including marks earned through queued content. Every project reward reputation experience, and this experience unlock reputation level, up to 5. For example, the Borg stf doesn't reward the token you used to trade for a shield, a deflector... as before, but they reward marks you can use to "buy" the same item from the associated reputation store.

The content also evolved, you can perfectly level up a character through the storyline episode, following a story tied to several arc (Cardassian arc, Romulan arc, Dominion...). Those missions are story heavy, and follow a storyline. While sometime you are ask to kill 5 aliens, they also feature puzzle and diplomacy. They are better than the average "kill 10 rats" missions, by much.

Also, I don't know if it was yet in the game when you left, but STO feature the Foundry, a mission creator for player. Players will build a mission from scratch, and then you can play it. Some mission are dedicated to fight and grind, some are without a single fight and dedicated to a story, and most of them are in between.

I suggest you to make a new character, and level up to 50 for the storyline, which is great (except for the low level fed).
