Many people in the past have begged for the Cardassians to be added as a fourth faction. I know that people may absolutely hate this idea, but perhaps implement the Cardassians as a joint faction with the Romulan Republic.
I know this may sound horrible to many die-hard advocates of a Cardassian faction but this would be a more realistic alternative. It would hopefully give both the feeling of being more fleshed out factions than what when have now.
One major problem with the Romulan faction and one that would very likely to occur if a Cardassian faction were to be implemented is that lack of ships compared to the federation and the Klingon empire is the lack of a variety of ships. By combining these two Cryptic could more easily traverse this problem and satisfy player's want for ships.
For storyline perspective both the Romulans and the Cardassians were superpowers at one point in their histories. With both in their underpowered state, they decided to combine resources and regain power together. Both Cardassia and New Romulus are seeking the favor of the federation, giving them a common ground.
There is also canon evidence of cooperation between the two species. At the beginning of the dominion war the Cardassian Obsidian Order the Romulan Tal Shair launched a joint preemptive strike against the dominion. While these organizations are not the shining light of their civilizations, it proves that both were able to put aside their xenophobic attitudes to accomplish a common goal.
If Cryptic were to do this, please add an option to create new fleets, perhaps using a modified mesh of DS9 with some Romulan modifications.
I believe that with the limited resources of Cryptic studios this would provide the most justice to both the Cardassian and Romulan people.
I would sincerely like to see these implemented and take no credit for this idea in case Cryptic may wish to use it

Technically, this is not true. While they were able to put aside their differences for a common goal, they ultimately failed to actually accomplish that goal. Given that the history indicates that all Romulan-Cardassian joint ventures fail miserably, it might serve as a chilling effect on future such ventures.
What, that two half-done "fractions" forced to share one faction's place in the game somehow equals an actual faction? It don't add up. In this instance, two halves combine to equal...two halves.
Yeah, not seeing any upside to this implementation. -shrug-
I a new faction is added, its going to feel extremely repetitive after LOR. There would be nothing new to add. At least romulans had singularity cores. I'd rather more content for all players be added rather than a new faction.

it's a null point anyways. whatever the dev meant by a near term about no factions could mean several months to 60 years from now. you may wanna check out that latest interview on the main page.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
Right now, if Cryptic was to add the Cardassians, I really hope they take a different approach than they did with the Romulans. Especially when it's hinted the Cardassians were going to join the Federation or be similar to the Ferengi with dual citizenship.
Though saying that it puts me at odds how the Klingons and Romulans could benefit from that as well.

Given what they said this time last year regarding the Romulan Faction, they could already be working on a Cardassian faction.

could, yes but from what that dev wrote up even though i means nothing to me, he stated there is no faction for the moment ("near term"), but like the word normal, define it.

New expansion has been said to be late this year. Near term would be season 9 as we know from lor an expansion isn't a season. So from all available info if a new faction is coming it will be part of the next expansion which will be after season 9 maybe after season 10.
If anyone read the recent Salamiinferno interview... He said that there are no plans to add another faction in the near term. So the next expansion is most likely something else like a level cap? or maybe sector space expansion? who knows...
yeah that interview had a lot of intentional vagarities. "Near term" is definitely not talking about the expansion they mentioned possibly doing late this year.
I'm currently expecting them to add another faction eventually, not sure what faction it'd be though.

That would be like Germany and Russia forming a united Gerusia in the 70s...
