I'm working on a series of missions that will allow the player to experience the story from the perspective of different species. I'm starting with the human mission and then will move on to other species, like the Trill, Vulcans, etc. Unfortunately, I've been having some issues with writing out a story that is long enough to give it some sense of "epic-ness", as well as fitting in enough side plots to give the other species full missions as well, if you know what I mean. I'm having trouble figuring out what my problems actually are.
Here's what I have so far (not to confuse you all, the story takes place in an alternate timeline in the year 2165; note that the human missions assumes the player is human): the missions starts with the player dropping off the human delegation to the annual Conference of the Coalition, a diplomatic meeting for all the powers of known space. After doing so, the player receives a distress call from a Trill research team on a pre-warp planet. When the player arrives, hostile aliens blockade the system and abduct the player, who is then rescued by an Andorian strike team. The player must reach the transporter room, and then must rescue the Andorians by beaming them all off the alien ship. The player escapes the system, but his/her communications are down, so he/she returns to the Conference, just in time to be trapped in the human delegation quarters by a power outage. The player tries, but fails to escape the quarters, and is eventually rescued by Vulcans, who had been able to escape their quarters. The Vulcans question the player about what happened at the pre-warp planet, and then leave to investigate the power outage. The player goes to free the others trapped in their quarters, and after freeing several delegations, an explosion rocks the complex. Searching for the source, the player encounters a strange-looking Romulan in the corridors, who, after delivering a mysterious message, disappears. The player continues to the site of the explosion, where he/she finds the main conference room in ruins. Looking around, the player is outed into a side room, where he/she is trapped by an unknown NPC. After overhearing a strange conversation through the door, the player is discovered by several Vulcans who heard the explosion. Soon thereafter, power is partially restored thanks to the Andorians the player rescued earlier. The sensors are giving readings that make no sense, so the delegates agree to split up and search the complex. The player goes to the Romulan section of the complex and again encounters the strange Romulan. He repeats his message and then suggests the player enter the back room of the Romulan quarters, before disappearing again.
I'm thinking of having a cliffhanger behind the door, and then following up with a second mission later.
My main issues are these:
1) I'm not sure the story is very solid. I did leave out some things I already have planned, but I still am unsure.
2) I'm not sure how players would react to failing and being rescued by others. In the story, humans aren't as technologically advanced as the other species, and so end up relying on the others to help them out.
3) Will players react negatively to the mission assuming they are human? I plan to make this very obvious in the mission description and opening dialogs.
4) My map-making skills are not particularly good, though I can do the other things. I have watched the tutorials on YouTube, but I still can't do it. Is there another way to figure it out? I've tried fiddling with it, but it usually just makes me more confused.
Any other comments, advice or tips you can give would be greatly appreciated!
DOn't worry about other people getting mad at a mission assuming they are human. If they don't read, that's their fault.
Map making can be very tedious, especially on the ground, you will get better as you go, just keep practicing.
If players get mad at them failing as part of the story, they don't need to be playing foundry missions.
The story seems solid except for their being a main goal. What is the main plot point of the story? Perhaps having some more info given about the mystery Romulan (if he is the bad guy).
