I know that this is likely to get me in trouble... but has anyone else noticed that the Voth Heavy Combat Armor bears a very strong resemblance to Sangheili Combat Armor from the Halo series?
It is said the best weapon is one that is never fired. I disagree. The best weapon is one you only have to fire... once.
Every type of armour had been done now on fiction/reality and it's next to impossible to come up with something that does not look a bit like something else.
I'd say it's no coincidence. For a long time now the game got more and more content that more or less closely resembles other franchises to lure in a broader group of players, It even started this way. Take a look at the default gear, armours and uniforms. Nothing looks like it would belong to Star Trek, yet the Mass Effect resemblance is quite striking. Add to that the miniguns and other ridiculous shaped guns, the space ship combat that feels like you control a small Starfighter regardless of what ship you have and you got your answer
But I have another question. I don't really mind the armours, though I don't understand why we run around in salvaged enemy armour instead of having a Starfleet adaptation of said gear.
^ Memory Alpha.org is not canon. It's a open wiki with arbitrary rules. Only what can be cited from an episode is. ^
"No. Men do not roar. Women roar. Then they hurl heavy objects... and claw at you." -Worf, son of Mogh
"A filthy, mangy beast, but in its bony breast beat the heart of a warrior" - "faithful" (...) "but ever-ready to follow the call of the wild." - Martok, about a Targ
"That pig smelled horrid. A sweet-sour, extremely pungent odor. I showered and showered, and it took me a week to get rid of it!" - Robert Justman, appreciating Emmy-Lou
Respectfully, I don't see it, at least from the samples provided. There are similarities,to be sure, but that's like saying that Manet ripped off Monet. Both are Impressionistic artists, and as friends undoubtedly influenced each other, but each had their own unique contributions.
Let me note some strong differences from the samples provided:
Halo:
head: glowing eyes, round aged-copper chrome dome under a swept-back, winged cover shoulders: high points & round pattern matching the "chrome dome"
thighs: extra aged-copper metal...um..thingy attached to top of thigh
knees: spilt-end to thigh armor, another round cap to match the "chrome dome"
calves: hard to tell from the shot, but appears to be fairly smooth, minimalistic armor
feet: organic looking split-toed with nails, rounded overplate
Voth:
Head: full face-plate glass, stripe down center of swept-back helmet. No apparent winged, swept-back overplate. Looks like top and side plates merge to form the sweep
shoulders: small, rounded, close to actual shoulder, no points, no circle pattern
thighs: smoothed topped, no extras
knees: single-point extention of thigh top acts as cap, rings around lower knee area
calves: extra-thick armor with appearance of extending over thinner sleeker insert
feet: kind of hard to tell from the provided shot, but they appear to be very angular, geometric, and not very organic
The similarities mostly boil down to a couple of things:
Back-swept helmet: A simple commonality of both Turian and Voth biology. Just an interesting way to break up a humanoid form I guess. Elites have all sorts of crests on helmets, some fitting this more than others.
Large, pointed thigh pads: I haven't seen it in Turians, but prominent in Elites, especially due to their leg proportions and digitigrady. Some dev comments indicate the voth armor was meant to look almost digitigrade to enhance the alien dinosaur feel.
Rounded, ornamental aesthetic: Not really fitting with Turians, but Halo Elites and Voth use very advanced technology they haven't really optimized over the centuries, so wearing fancy power armor fits both well.
Take a look at my Foundry missions! Conjoined, Re-emergence, and . . .
To be honest, the entire Dyson sphere thing reminds me of the Halo series: Ancient, powerful object created by long dead race, check. Object able to create serious repercussions for the entire galaxy, check. Two factions warring for control of said object, check. Automated defenses protecting the object, check. The similarities are uncanny. However, that's not a bad thing. Halo was amazing and so is the entirety of the Dyson sphere. Good job Cryptic

I am Il Shadow and i approve these Shennanigans!

Halo Sangheili Combat Armor
Turian Armor Mass Effect
Voth Heavy Combat Armor
The resemblance to the Halo Sangheili armor is striking, almost crazy... and even the Turian armor... can you say... COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT??? XD.
Jk jk... just thought it was interesting is all. Don't mind running around STO as an Elite at all XD
But I have another question. I don't really mind the armours, though I don't understand why we run around in salvaged enemy armour instead of having a Starfleet adaptation of said gear.

If you want to point fingers at swarmers, I would say the Sentinels from The Matrix.

So the culprit for these "copied-looking" armors and weapons is a blocked picture link? Who knew?
