That's a bit like predicting that when you let go of this rock, it will hit the ground.
More like predicting that water is wet, or that cockroaches squish when you step on them.
Anyways, I could see them doing a Dominion faction. the storyline for Sphere of Influence indicated that the Iconians WERE plotting to take over the Dominion in the future. The Iconians THOUGHT that the Dominion couldn't find them, but.... after SoI.... who knows? Maybe there's a Dominion fleet in the Delta Quadrant already?
PLEASE, NO NEW Factions / species / playable people.
Improve the 3 years worth of stuff we have. Expand on that and MOVE THE STORY LINE ALONG!!!
I agree with this whole heartedly. Along with a crafting update some foundry love. And some tweaks to reputation gear. I'm sure there's other things we would love to pile on top of that too.
Your forgetting borgified vessels. Vessels with heavy borg tech mods. Although I would play, I think a Borg faction could be the final nail in the coffin for the borg. They keep being watered down and finally playing as borg, flying their ships and finding them less than unbeatable would make them even less intimidating.
I dont think this one will be a new faction, however if it is they may go down the delta quadrant route. some kind of delta quadrant alliance or lib borg of all the different delta species as there is a lot to work with.
personally i think this one will be a straight up endgame expansion. a lot of story missions and zones dealing with the voth, elachi etc and finally the invasion of the iconians.
Updated the list, adding the theories/wishes of an Iconian conflict, playable Dominion, and Exploration expansion.
I also added the theory floating around the forums that the Krenim will be involved, per a poll asking what Delta Quadrant species players would like to see.
The final nails in the coffin for the Borg was Seven of Nine, the Borg children, Unimatrix Zero, and the last Voyager episode. The Borg were just not scary in Voyager.
If Cryptic is calling the Season late next year an expansion, then it is a very good chance that it will be a Cardassian or Cardassian/Romulan mini-faction. Mini-factions are easy. Just requires a lot of initial work for the Expansion and just costumes and ships after that.
I'd love to see some sort of playable Borg faction, they are and always have been my favorite species. Considering a large portion of the coming updates are theorized to be Delta-quadrant oriented, it'd be a fair assumption that the next "faction" could be Borgish or Liberated Borgish. It'd also be an easy step for the developers as they are (could be, we don't know for certain) working on delta-quadrant stuff.
As for the nay sayers against the Borg, it's in the future of Star Trek Canon, we've already seen that our technology has advanced enough to sufficiently combat them and they are no longer the unstoppable monsters we used to know. Now that STO has already rather successfully integrated another "faction" we can assume that the next faction they introduce will be better than the last. They know what mistakes they made and how to fix them, the next faction (be it what it may) will be smoother and overall most likely a better experience.
The Borg "faction" would most likely be some sort of Liberated Borg faction, where the players are Borg that have been separated from the Hive and most likely created their own. In essence, they would not be "true" liberated Borg, but rather an offshoot Hive that has rebelled or separated from the main one. Perhaps they want to keep their individuality, but still embrace their hive mentality?
I would imagine they still fly Borg ships; Probes, Spheres, and Cubes. Perhaps some assimilated ships from other species? It would not be a faction you would play for ship variety, but one you'd play for the experience of being a Borg.
Ground combat and classes would be a treat as we know that the Borg have Medical, Tactical and Engineering drones, so the classes could be the same. Hopefully they'd make some new abilities and "kits" to supplement Borg playstyle and combat as a Borg would be quite interesting as well. temporary assimilation of enemies, built in weapons, slow movement, etc. It would be a vast change from what we normally expect from ground combat and offer a new challenge and change of pace to ground combat.
In all, the Borg as a playable faction would be very different and possibly not for everyone. It would be unique and interesting and allow for a new play style and I sincerely hope that it is a serious contender for the next playable faction. Nothing would bring me back to this game faster than a Borg faction of some kind. Well? Perhaps a playable Jupiter
Ugh the paint isn't even dry on season 8 and already we're doing this?
If we do get a Borg Faction it will be a watered down liberated Borg faction probably given the same alliance mechanic as the Romulans and using hybridized Borg FED Klingon Romulan ships, there is no way we could have a faction that is hostile with everyone since they would still have to work with the generic map, mission, economy of the game. As for flying spheres and cubes, not likely unless they are scaled down and nerfed to complete parity with every other player ship in the game.
Then we'll all get to read endless forum posts from Borg players whining about how they can't play real Borg being FED or Klingon Lackeys in their weak mini spheres and mini cubes.
As far as game play is concerned it would not be any different than as any other race in the game, it could not be otherwise, there is an assimilated effect in the game that the player can experience when encountering the Borg, where the player loses control of the character, his vision is distorted and he attacks his own crew, but if players had to experience elements of that effect continuously while playing it would likely result in many players getting violently ill.
Since for a little investment you can already play as a liberated Borg officer on a ship with Borg enhancements for a faction of your choice, I can think of other areas better deserving of future development.
If something is not broken, don't fix it, if it is broken, don't leave it broken.
As an experienced roach-stomper, I can tell you that roaches do not squish when you step on them. It is really more of a crunch, as their exoskeletons produce the dominant noise when crushed, rather than fleshy insides.

I've never seen in person a cockroach with a hard enough exoskeleton to make a crunch...
-Increase of level cap to 60, if not higher, bringing the ability to command a fleet of ships.
This is the only part I care about honestly, perhaps the level increase to allow this is also of interest but in the end, so many mothballed ships will at last be useful for those of us that have been here since launch. HURRAY!!!!!!

Honestly, just no. The Borg aren't even a species. They take their members from just about every other space-faring (and maybe even some pre-space-flight ones) species out there.
Not to mention, I'm pretty sure, if you get THAT many "liberated" Borg running around as their own "faction", the Collective would turn around, and make stomping them a priority. And really, the little bit's and pieces of non-main Collective Borg couldn't mount an effective enough resistance.
And especially, if those free Borg still used a good number of implants, on top of the rest of this, there's a pretty good chance that the Collective's computing power would override them, and take back control. How would you like your character to suddenly become an NPC? Sure you could log in, and watch it get shot at, but any controls you click would have no affect, as the server effectively has complete control of your character....permanently.

because I find season 8 and the voth to be very meh, so i'm looking forward already to season 9 instead.
Lol, other than getting stuff anytime I complete a Dyson 1hr xp project, yeah, it's just kind of blah to me as well. And the dps figures for the hand weapons are out of whack with other gorund equipment. I think the avg dps showing, for that protonic stuff, is like 100-115dps, whereas even for Mk XII other stuff (blues & purples), the average dps is more like 85-90dps.
It's like they want to really force people to abandon every other weapon in the game, for ground at least.

And whilst I've stated this before, I don't see why the assumption by many is that 'Expansion' MUST = new faction; the fact that STO's first major expansion resulted in a new faction doesn't necessarily indicate that ANY future expansion(s) must mean the same.
Quite so, I dont see a new faction on the horizon at all.
I do see the possibility of a major overhaul of something though.
Possibly the vaunted level cap increase, perhaps the occasionally requested KDF season, maybe a big change to some other mechanism.
I dont think it'll be just content.
I think they'll be looking to go big.
But not a faction.
