So I don't post much and really don't complain about much, but I have to say, it is really really really annoying that every time I switch ships I have to redo my BOFF layout and power layout. Seriously. I'm not sure how it affects bottom line, but as a free to play player I really don't like switching ships and don't really buy ships all that often because of this. Heck, I still have my Risian corvette and Obelisk carrier in their respective requisition boxs. Can the devs please do something about this?! I appreciate all they've done for the game, but this seems like it should be something simple to do. Sorry if this has been discussed ad nauseum.
Ya know, I recently swapped into an assault cruiser and back to my Mobius. When I jumped back into my Mobius, all of boff powers filled into their tray spots...so I am quite sure your experiencing a different issue.
Probably when you change similar boff seating, they don't auto fill where you would like.
Like, I have a cannon boff seating a beam seating. Only difference is bfaw2x2 and csv1x2. Because I swapped boffs. All subsequent powers (even though they are the same) are wiped.
The fix would need to be a save load out feature. If you loose one of the boffs that is part of the load out or change a boff skill...the save is erased.
Not quite sure about your setups,
though if I get a new ship, it starts out basic and has to be changed.
If I hop into a ship that has previously been set up, I don't have to change anything.
Though I still go through it to make sure everything is right.
Oh, I still have to redo the active space doffs either way.
I don't recall if my power levels stayed.
I already figured out why this happens, and it has to do with the database and how it stores data. Short version: your ships aren't "serialized" or uniquely identified, and your tray layout is not part of your ship data. Instead, your ships are essentially a numbered list, and your tray layouts are also a numbered list. Like so:
1. Ship A1. Tray A 2. Ship B2. Tray B 3. Ship C3. Tray C 4. Ship D4. Tray D 5. Ship E5. Tray E etc.
When you add, remove, or rename a ship, though, your ship order changes. In this example, I'm going to rename a ship:
1. Ship B1. Tray A 2. Ship C2. Tray B 3. Ship D3. Tray C 4. Ship E4. Tray D 5. Ship F5. Tray E etc.
Notice what happened to the ship <-> tray correspondence? It is no longer the same. Changes to your ship roster are not properly propagated to your saved power trays.(It's actually a lot more complicated than I showed, and there are a lot of other ways it gets messed up - this is just an overly simplified example. Since the number of trays is always the same as the number of ships, one of the previous trays gets deleted when you dismiss a ship. I've never figured out which one, though, so it could very well be random, or the first tray in the list, the last tray, etc. Regardless, the tray list wouldn't actually remain the same, there would be a change in it as well.)
I've taken to keeping a screenshot of my toolbar on my desktop, that way every time I make changes to my ship roster, I can re-create my toolbar easily.
Better ship management is something we're actively looking into, and the goal is to make it much easier to switch between ships.

At this point I would settle for not having to check to make sure my BOffs are still assigned to their stations before I queue up for a mission. Its been so bad for so long I finally had to rename many of my BOffs according to where they go so I could reassign them faster.

I've been hoping for this for a very long time. I always envisioned some sort of dedicated ship equipment inventory from which saved profiles could pull parts for saved configurations.
The idea being something like hack and slash RPGs have with saved offhand + mainhand combinations.
Example:
You click set 1 and the game draws your sword and shield out of inventory and puts them in your hands.
You click set 2 and the game draws your bow and quiver out of the inventory and replaces the sword and shield back in the inventory.
You click set 3 and the bow and quiver go back and the two handed sword comes out.
Obviously with our starships there would be a lot more to swap. The boffs from our boff pool, the doffs from our doff pool and the weapons, shield engine, consoles etc from the equipment pool.
I think a new equipment pool inventory space would be a better way to go then using the existing inventory space for 4 reasons.
1) We simply don't have enough inventory + bank space for this as things are.
2) This keeps the equipment we use somewhere we are not at risk of accidently selling it.
3) By allowing all ship configurations for all ships to draw from the same pool it gives the player the convenience of switching ships as well as configurations without individually moving every item.
4) Additional equipment pool inventory space can be sold through the C store to help offset the development cost.. Possibly give us enough space to fully equip two ships + 2 slots per purchased ship slot and 8-10 slots sold separately in packs up to a reasonably large maximum.

Thank you. I can tell you that the #1 hindrance to trying new and different things is the annoyance of setting up everything.
And one of the most annoying things in STO is losing your slotted boffs. I just assume now that any time someone trades me a boff for training, it'll TRIBBLE up my boffs. And I haven't bothered to set up shuttlecraft on my characters because I am pretty sure switching to it and back will break something.
