And that's where we differ. I do look as Starfleet as a military organization. It's just that Starfleet also does a lot of other things that real militaries mostly don't anymore.

Back on-topic, I just discovered that this error extends to existing boffs. All of mine are Commander rank (albeit some of them use other rank insignias for story purposes), but when they're on an away team they show as Cadet if you hit their information button.

A side-effect of this issue is that I was unable to assign a rank pin to my boff's costume. He was formerly an Ensign but has been reassigned to "cadet." He wears the TWOK uniform, and there is simply no rank pin for a cadet, and no alternatives are available. I had to promote the boff, and then rank costume options appeared.

Not sure if this issue is restricted to the TWOK costume, or others as well.
You're right. The work here is very important.

Sounds like this error combined with the preexisting fact that you can't give a boff a rank insignia greater than their gameplay rank.

Have we all forgot about Cadet Nog? If it's good enough for Sisko it's good enough for me.

You realize that is just a blog article with not references cited? If you don't cite your sources, it is TRIBBLE. While you did cite yours, the source you cited from did not and so that source must be discounted altogether. Unless you can fine the original time and date of that interview where Gene Rodenberry disavowed the Movies, it is just hearsay and speculation.

No references cited? What about the two lines at the very end of the article, marked with *, clearly denoting the three main sources used to put that post together (One of which was written by Shatner, who presumably had a pretty good idea of what was going on during filming).

On-topic: I haven't noticed myself if the 'cadet' rank sticks after signing a BOFF to your crew, I'll check it out when I get home and report back, I've been meaning to re-roll a Feddie anyway.

That's the same reason why Trill are cross-faction (Curzon had Klingon friends) or why the Defiant and Galaxy Dreadnought come with a cloaking device (because we saw a unique ship having it). It is a very questionable reason to do something, really :D

You're right, but the fact that we have to point to the rare exceptions to the "rule" that the minimum rank is usually Ensign only highlights the fact (I use the term "fact" loosely here) that making Cadet the default starter rank for boffs, and omitting Ensign entirely, is a mistake.

IMO, a better halfway solution would be to have all boffs start as Ensigns, but provide the option to either:

    1) Not give them any rank pips (which we used to be able to do) to denote that they're a cadet (or stick them in the Academy uniform, which in fact has Cadet pips);

    or

    2) Create new Cadet rank pips for all uniforms that unlock with every new boff, so we can assign them as either Ensign or Cadet as desired (like we have with the "Chief" pips already).

Of course, we all know the real reason Joined Trills are cross-faction is that there was a lot of rage at launch from KDF players who couldn't play as the race they paid for.

People did that? I mean, I buy a Trill and am enraged that I can't use them with my Klingon character? Can I get my B'Rel retrofit on my fed char? I bought that, but now it says my character cannot use it...

People did. The Joined Trill was Federation-only at launch, but was changed shortly thereafter. Lots of posts about how unfair it was that Liberated Borg were available to both factions but Joined Trill were not. The issue was complicated somewhat due to someone saying in an interview that they would be available to both factions.

A sample thread, for your entertainment: http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=97545

We're not 'forgetting' any cadet, we're trying to keep STO from forgetting ensigns.

There were a lot of Dax fans at launch who argued that the Trill were friendly to Klingons because of Curzon.
