ST:NG S3 E10 "The Defector"

hebdahebda Member Posts: 58 Arc User
I just finished watching this episode http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Defector_(Star_Trek:_The_Next_Generation) and immediately thought of STO:LOR. In the end of the episode a letter is left to the daughter of a Romulan, presumably in a time in which the Romulan and Federation are no longer at war.

Well that time is now, in terms of STO. I thought it might interesting to have a small mission or story done around this particular STNG ending. If not from Cryptic, then perhaps from one of our fine Foundry authors.

Anyway, just wanted to drop the idea.

Play "Sphere of Influence" and have a chat with the Commander of the Romulan Flagship.

There is nothing more to say on the matter i'd say.

You know that the new Captain of the Romulan Flagship, whom you meet in Sphere of Influence, is the daughter of the defector. So in a way they are continuing that story. ;)

his daughter is Tiaru Jarok and she clearly got the message her father wanted her to have, why else is she in the RR and on its flagship?

Does that mean you're watching TNG at 5 in the morning?
And here I thought I was an insomniac.;)

I was watching it on BBC America then some other show came on. BBC America tends to run TNG marathons so I watch them if I am awake, in this case....I was very awake...lol

I thought the STO forums have decided to ignore The Defector because the Romulan was too "goodie two shoes" and wanted to avoid a war instead of starting one for no particular reason.

he was betrayed from within, he thought a war was coming which never existed and he was concerned about the sheer loss of life considering past wars and skirmishes between starfleet and the RSE typically ended in disaster, including the thought of the death of his family and the destruction of romulus which was clearly seen several times in his mood and the way he talks. it showed how volatile the internal situation is within the empire and some of that aims which extended to sto.

I never picked up on the connection either and that was one of my fave TNG episodes.

Then again, I needed the game to tell me who D'Tan was and why he mattered.

D'tan was just a kid when spock and pardek were working out how to run the underground movement, on more then a few occasions, d'tan chose to show off vulcan objects and values and as much as spock was intrigued he none the less had to chase the kid off. put him around 10 years at the time.

put it more then a decade ago. i would imagine, but then again it wasnt the only popular show to go out around the same time, robot wars went with it.

Another good non Tal Shiar Romulan focused TNG EP is 6:14 - Face of the Enemy.

Carolyn Semour (Taris) pops in again playing a different Romulan Commander, one more than willing to show her distaste for what Romulus' Gestapo have become.

Not all Romulans were shown to be evil on the various incarnations of Star Trek. Heck, the Dominion War most likely would have been lost without them.

But they had to be tricked into joining the war. Otherwise they were content to just sit back and let everyone else die.

Not being Alfred Bester levels of evil at all times doesn't remotely equate to being white knights riding to the rescue of the oppressed. There is considerable room for principled Romulan self-interests to conflict with the "goodness" of the Federation without going into the moustache twirling clichedom of villianny that some apparently want all Romulans to be.

In addition to this, it's also part of Star Trek to show that not all people/races/species are bad. Worf was created to show that not all Klingons are bad guys. Prior to him, Klingons were mostly the black hats in ToS and the films.

Also to give an idea of how the honor the klingons talked about could mean something more than "we kicked your butt so that's honorable, you kicked ours so that's dishonorable".

romulans were an additional component after "it's a fakkkkeeee!!!" man was assassinated by garak, but they were not the critical component, that answer was left to the cardassian people and the Damar rebellion. If Damar had not turned and Lakarian city was still standing along with 800m Cardassians it would of been costly to the point of extreme.
