Season 8 Foundry Heads-up

((Note: This plan is subject to change))

Hi Foundry Authors!

With the release of Season 8 next Tuesday, the team and I wanted to give you all a heads up on some Foundry-related items:
1) At the time Season 8 releases, the editing tool for the Foundry will be disabled as previous missions are republished -- we expect this editing downtime to last only a short while. Republishing will be an automatic process. The ability to play missions will remain available.

2) When we do bring up the editor, the ability to review will be temporarily disabled.

3) Foundry spotlighted missions will return once editing comes back up -- also, we will be delaying the next Spotlight on the Foundry for a couple weeks.

Thanks for your understanding and we look forward to seeing all of your amazing missions built during Season 8 and beyond.

Cheers,

Brandon =/\=

Are we getting any new assets or features with Season 8?

    Voth NPCs (ground and space)

    Also from yesterday's tribble patch
    Foundry:
    • When a UGC mission is completed by someone who is not the author the review screen pops up. There will now be a tags drop down button that you can click on that will allow you to select any number of tags. Clicking on one should show a check box on it without closing the drop down.
    • When you search for foundry missions, there will now be a histogram beneath the mission ratings that shows how many times a mission has been tagged with the various tags.
    • Finally, if you go to search for a mission, upon choosing 'Custom' from the drop down you will see three new search parameters at the bottom. These drop downs will have a list just like the one from when you reviewed a mission. One drop down is the list of tags that must be included in the histogram of the mission for it to show up, one drop down is the list of tags where at least one of the tags must show up, and one drop down is the list of tags to exclude from your search completely.

We're getting Voth ground and space enemy groups. Check out my testing report here: http://starbaseugc.com/index.php/news/voth-npc-group-test-report/

And also a mission tagging system. In short, when a player finishes the mission, they can tag it as any of a number of things including Combat, comedy, etc etc (I forget which ones exactly). When a player looks at a mission, right below the breakdown of the star ratings is a breakdown of how many people tagged it as each category. I believe you can search by category as well. It only got put up yesterday so haven't done much testing yet.

Here is hoping that this new system works. I still miss the good old days in season 6 when you didn't have to do a custom search to find story missions.

It will be interesting to see this tag system, but I still wonder why a "next" button is so hard. Imagine if Google worked like this search interface.

    "lolcats" 1-50 results

Want to search for combat "lolcats" too?

    1-50 results.

We should be able to click a button and see 50-100 or 100-150.

Thanks for the warning and good to know we're getting tags! Hope it won't be down for too long, but I'm sure everyone will be busy playing the new content anyway. If I had the sphere AND foundry I doubt I'd make it into work for a week....

That's quite the paradox, how could you nerf nerf when the nerf is nerfed. But how would the nerf be nerfed when the nerf is nerfed? This allows the nerf not to be nerfed since the nerf is nerfed? But if the nerf isn't nerfed, it could still nerf nerfs. But as soon as the nerf is nerfed, the nerf power is lost. So paradoxally it the nerf nerf lost its nerf, while it's still nerfed, which cannot be because the nerf was unable to nerf.

I call it, the Stoutes paradox.

I think that in addition to the tagging system it would be nice if there were a few different default lists that searched for "story", etc. Just adding the tags I don't think will be enough.

I am totally on board with what kirksplat said. We need to be able to search more than just the 50 top results. There is so much work to becoming a foundry author and now you are buried so far down the list. It took me most of this year to get my first mission qualifying for rewards and that was with me spamming the forums with my sig and asking at every reviewers thread that I could.

ohhh i like this idea!! Cause then people know what to expect before playing. Great idea.

and I too agree with what kirksplat said as well, to find more than 50 search results.

Also I'd like to add the idea that perhaps the Foundry should automatically determine a time by which the episode may take for a player. (course I don't know how it would do this, but with computer's today, anything is possible).

    ;)

    Brandon,

Will they have the maps that destroyed the missions at S7 release repaired?
It has gone a whole season without correcting this unreal TRIBBLE up. It destroyed
my Spawn of Medusa 4 to the point it cannot be repaired, over 229 errors. It has
left a lot of people unable to complete the series without skipping the most important
part and now they are wanting to play the rest, but cannot. :(
Obviously it was blown off for this season, so I am holding out hope it has
been corrected and will be fixed in the S8 patch. Please check on it and let us know.
It's the Ice Caves 03 map as well as others too that affected other folks' missions.

This is another reason why we need campaign support in the STO Foundry - even with tags, the search results are likely to be clogged up with missions from the middle of a series, that someone who hasn't played the series up to that point won't be interested in. Allowing authors to define groups of their missions as series, or campaigns as they are called in Neverwinter, and then making those campaigns searchable separately from standalone missions, would make it a lot easier for players to find missions of both types.

I'll just throw my 2 EC's in with Kirkfat and Nagorak.

We need to be able to see way more than just 50 missions on each list. It is absolutely killing missions play-wise which aren't 'weighted' enough to make the top 50. It's a vicious Catch 22 - - how do you get a mission into the top 50? - have lots of plays. How do you get lots of plays? - be in the top 50.

And while the new 'tagging' system is certainly a welcome addition, it would be much better to have default tabs for the major catagories along the side of the mission window to help people quickly go to what they are looking for - I mean seriously, I doubt the average player even knows there is a 'custom' search menu - or even where to find it - for Foundry missions.

I would invite Cryptic to evaluate how their c-store would work under the Foundry search engine.

Want a costume? Here are the top ten. Sorry, no next button to browse. But, maybe you can do a custom search with tags according to each series. Top ten results for each one.

But, hey, you might find additional things to purchase by paying attention to dev spam, dev signatures, and trailer videos on youtube. The individual artists who made the costumes are trying to get some hits, so they are making signature banners. If you know how to do a custom search in the c-store by artist name, you'll find it.

Go forth and find what you want. Thanks for your patronage.

P.S. And sorry that map on our FE series is borked. We've been waiting 5 months to get a programmer to fix.

Yeah, when I was a new player to STO, it took a while for me to find out about the foundry and then the search feature took a while and it kind of turned me off. If I had not read that there were so many great missions (here on the forums) or found that much of the in game content was not quite to my liking. I would have never bothered. Now the foundry is my favorite part of the game.

Someone correct me if i am wrong please, but i think the republish process lasts for round about two weeks each time right? It should be added that we may experience new bugs due to the code / tech update, which could delay the ability to edit a bit. My rough guess: another one - two weeks. A hint from Brandon on the matter:

    3) Foundry spotlighted missions will return once editing comes back up -- also, we will be delaying the next Spotlight on the Foundry for a couple weeks.

So, my guess for re-enabled editing would be: early - mid December. Which is fine. I just hope it's all settled by then. Christmas & New Year incoming!

First off, notice he said it was delay with "Foundry spotlights", not the Foundry. Of course that's mainly because of the Editor not being available. And that's exactly my post regarding the "waiting time", having it delayed months is very frustrating.

This is a main reason why I have never been able to publish my Foundry mission after 2 years, because I have to wait months for the editor to come back online after these Seasons. Then take the time to repair any damage. Heck, I'm still repairing damage from Season 5.

It's frustrating they got a dedicated Foundry team, and it takes months for them to fix problems that would take a few days to a week if it was part of the main content. And Geko is bragging bout "getting the Foundry out of Beta"? Ugh, just makes me want to facedesk.

Yeah, I use that same map in "Ghosts of War, Part VI". I've been giving that series another round of remastering lately (in between building episodes of my Romulan trilogy), so if it's not fixed by the time I get to Part VI, I may just redesign the Ice Caves 03 map out of that mission.

Anyone who is not crazy has withdrawn their missions by now in anticipation for S8. The foundry is never a priority and certainly won't be during the launch of a new season. If there are bugs (as there always are) that make missions unplayable, it could be a long time before they are solved. Weeks. Months. All the while, you will be unable to access the editor to withdraw/fix. And then the reviews start coming in. Trust me... I've been there.
