General research skill

I'm fairly new to crafting (I've done it a few times in the Deferi invasion Zone), and I was wondering if someone could explain to me how general research skills are earned?

I know the answer may be simple, but I would like to know anyways. Is it that any time you craft, you get research skill points?

    Yes, any time you craft you get research skill points.
