give sci ships dedicated uni slots

There's been some suggestion around about ways to boost sci ships to have more of an impact at end-game especially wrt DPS and the lack thereof. Sci ships have always been "low dps" by design, but as powercreep has lifted up escorts and BFaW cruisers, the gap between them and the "low dps" sci ships has been increasingly widened.

But... we dont want to just add weapons or damage consoles, that just takes them out of their role. Instead we want a way to boost the magery of the ships, to be able to affect the environment without actually doing moar DPS directly.

My suggestion, how about adding universal console slots, that can only hold universal consoles? No you cannot put more armor or tactical consoles, but you can put in an isometric charge and/or a subspace jumper, or slot a sensor grid, or do some of the other things. Optionally you could also slot the rep consoles and free up some of your eng/sci/tac slots for more narrow purpose. It would give them more capabilities over ship classes, without contributing to DPS creep

What about the ability to purchase an additional console slot in the area of your choosing?

No thankyou, this would be basically giving sci ship free console space, and would never happen. Your complaint is about Sci dps, then place the Universal consoles in your engineer or sci slots which don't effect your dps. (It's what Cruiser captains have to do if they want to use uni consoles to increase Crit chance for higher weapon dps)

If spec'ed correctly sci ships actually can do decent dmg, but that was never their main role. Theyre a CC ship type, and basically adding more "free" abilities via consoles would be far from balance.

Most sci fleet ships have 2-3 tact slots,4 sci,3-4 engi slots- and is more then enough for at least 2 field generators, all tact dmg consoles, and to still have room for Uni consoles. What this adds is customization. Do you stack uni consoles for more abilities? Do you stack defensive consoles for tanking? Or how about Rep consoles for crit chance like the Borg and Rom consoles? . We dont need a "you can have everything" ship, I personally like having to make choices with my builds.

Sci is limited on DPS because they only 6 weapon slots, not because of consoles.

No. Everybody would take tac slots.

Right now people put uni consoles in the least expensive row (typically engi). Giving a couple of dedicated uni slots would have very little effect on balance, since it would just free up the cheap slots.

I'm actually in favor of giving all ships slots for universal consoles as you described them (we have to many already and keep adding more). I see no problem with giving science ships more than the other classes though.

The solution is to turn this game into something other than Star DPS Escorts Online. The content needs to require something other than moar DPS. Until Cryptic does that any and all 'solutions', including the cruiser commands, are just gimmicky fads that won't hold water for long.

Yeah, make science actually needed. The new CE was a good start in where Science debuffs and helps out the team. So got to do that with other NPCs as well.

In posting this, it reminded me of the original Feedback Pulse, where it was wrecking Escorts. So perhaps something similar would be welcome, where Science would be needed to debuff, or else escorts would have a harder time fighting.
