DDIS, some people do get heavily into the foundry, other people do other things in the game like role play etc.
Then there are the players who are just average at this game. Through no fault of their own they just don't grasp concepts as quickly and have a hard time keeping up with the fast pace sometimes required to not die from an alpha etc. These people could be more mature, less mature or just plain average. Then there are those that only stay because they honestly enjoy other players company and just want to have some fun pew pewing something that isn't going to throw a tantrum, though seeing the Borg do that would be hilarious.
There are lots of other things to do in this game other than PvP and considering how imbalanced and as ultimatum pointed out, rich you have to be to stay competitive in PvP, looking on the other side of the fence I cannot understand who would even bother with PvP anymore.
Granted you are asking in the PvP forum that question so really you will get a massive biased answer but try asking on the other forums why people do the content that they do instead of PvP.
I think the real question is if we didn't have the star base grind, who here would have left already even with PvP?
Rep grind still sucks balls though, bad from day 1 to existing players.
who here would have stopped playing this game years ago and never look back if this game had no pvp?
me
what the hell would i even be grinding for? so i could get through an stf faster?
i honestly dont know how so many people can stay interested in just the game play pve provides, ESPECIALLY when you compare it to the the pvp experience.
The fact that you play this game for PVP only doesn't mean everyone else should too. You are familiar with the PVP community, but there are many other communities in this game that have different goals and enjoy playing the game the way they like it. PVE folks, RP-ers, traders, ship collectors, accolade hunters, etc. etc.
It's actually quite nice that there are so many different things you can focus on in STO.
who here would have stopped playing this game years ago and never look back if this game had no pvp?
Honestly, I'm pretty tempted to put the PvP side of the game behind me.
Maybe I'm just getting old. I don't have the reflexes I did - heck, even the wee peabrain there gets addled at times. Maybe it's everything that one needs to keep up with...it's more like a job than a game.
The game's a very casual game - maybe I should just play it that way. There's only two forms of pressure in the game - the Speed Run PvE and PvP. I've never been into the Speed Run thing, and I can't keep up on the PvP side.
Maybe it's just time to chill...DOFF here and there, do some casual PvE here and there...treat it like a game again.

The pvp experience can be great. If you have to evenly matched teams, if it even comes down to the last kill. You have to stay alert, use your brain, time your skills. You need reflexes, you feel the adrenalin... yes a good pvp match can be an incredible experience.
Also it can be an exhausting one. Maybe you come home at night, you are tired, you are exhausted and you just want to relax, have some fun. Lean back, grab a bear and watch ships blow up. Maybe move the camera around a bit, enjoy the view. If you really blow up, no problem. You just respawn. There is not much excitement but there is also no stress, there is no loosing. In (cryptic) pve everybody wins. You grab a few friends, talk a bit, and have some fun.
Yes you can do something like that in pvp. But even a more casual match requires a bit more of your attention.
STO has a large community of Star Trek fans. They want to fly their ships, enjoy their powers. Not everyone seeks a challenge in their entertainment.
What would allow devs to participate in PvP with us so that they can have a first hand account on the status of Space PvP?
Another way of asking:
What stops the devs from PvPing with us?
IMO it would be better if the Dev's watched some star trek
So they would have a understanding what starship combat should look like and not the Fighter verses fighter game that they have made it out to b not resembling any startrek starship combat at all
Jellico....Engineer ground.....Da'val Romulan space Sci
Saphire.. Science ground......Ko'el Romulan space Tac
Leva........Tactical ground.....Koj Romulan space Eng
JJ-Verse will never be Canon or considered Lore...It will always be JJ-Verse
Yeah, what also doesn't help is and this isn't a dig, the PvP community isn't very large last time anyone mentioned figures. So no matter if the devs did say "hey let's devote a season to PvP" they would have to sell it t their bosses. Unfortunately the numbers don't play in PvP favour which means if said season was to bomb they will be out of a job, hell worst case scenario is people leave because it's forcing players to do something they don't want to do, case in point season 7.
Still I'll see if my fleets admiral can at least pitch the idea to branflakes for joining OPvP or TD so you can potentially get the ball rolling.
Yeah you're petting a pretty obvious factor by mentioning the numbers. Unfortunately Geko doesn't have the vision necessary to wrap his mind around invigorating PVP and generating revenue. I bet he doesn't even have the foggiest of notions on how to even start. All this can be gleaned by listening to his rationale on attempts to inquire further. He's not very forthcoming on any enthusiasm in this aspect. He's more interested in creating gimmick battles like dinos with laser faces in hope that generates revenue.

I agree on the multi-focus of goal setting. It's nice having a wide swathe. However, this is like owning 2 neighborhoods and while you're busy dressing up one to attract denizens the other has been bereft with neglect. PVP is a slum lord community. You've got an armful of players who keep complaining about how cold it is at night and a landlord who doesn't even know you exist. It's dysfunctional.

There's plenty of good reasons the starbase becomes a revenue generator and attracts determination from the player base. It's a prolonged tier upon tier of accomplishment I think a lot of players enjoy. But just because PVP has been left behind in dismal standards doesn't mean people should be forced to only enjoy whatever else they put a spot light on.
To me, this is just bad planning and failed oversight. It's like I mentioned before, they won't know what revenue will generate unless they fully revisit the realm. PVP is a motivator for gear and that gear takes grind.
When you stack demand from first hand experience you almost always get an explicit sale.
That's what brings me back to, who in the world is leading this dev team that cannot see that much? Just poor planning/leadership.
This is a good video to watch to understand why PvP isn't getting what you want.
Sure it's about the movie business but the point he makes at 2m30s in is still applicable. There just isn't a way to cover their asses if they were to dedicate more to PvP and it was to bomb. Maybe if there was more consensus on the forums or voting was carried out with a good sample you might get something.
Coincidentally this is probably why the vote was done on which area you wanted more content from etc.

Yes, exactly. They are literally jumping the shark at this point post Romulus with Dinosaurs, with lasers, in robot suits, in space.
They've spent how much time constantly fixing the foundry for the handful of die hards that want to RP against the mass that want to use it as the perfect farming tool?
All the the while they have a PvP community constantly creating its own, broadly social, content.
We fight each other, we make & run our own tournaments and launched player driven bootcamp.
They have this content that is effectively user generated, does not require much in the way of new art assets or new environments, or even new systems - just balancing the the things they make now, testing stuff, maybe adding something new here and there and they have left this untapped potential goldmine by the wayside.
I really think this is where some one or more persons on the team have let their personal bias really cloud their vision on what PvP could really be.
This is a good video to watch to understand why PvP isn't getting what you want.

Yeah a well known concept in the movie industry on gimmick releases parallels the lack of movement for PVP if truly Daniel Stahl is simply afraid to assist in its focus but I'd also firmly point that not investing in PVP stage development, integration for participants and pairing mechanisms is the very opposite of what Bob has to say about the movie industry. It's like trying to premiere a slash job without the movie theater entirely.
To NOT have a clearly established PVP area of the game is absolutely the last thing any MMO should be doing as most MMO's that still exist or will sprout from prior ashes will all seriously consider how riveting to make their versions of that product detail.
The fact that "star trek" online is the name of this game has got to be the only reason this game hasn't died a very appropriate death and with that notion in mind it seems to be the only rational explanation I can come up with in which Geko has gotten away with pure laziness on this subject.
Or his "competitive PvE as PvP" idea, where you interact with clickies and deal with NPCs to affect an outcome vs. actually fighting other players.
Honestly this is the only part of season 8's groundwork that I actually agree with. Nevermind that they perverted the only voth example by turning them into aggressive pro-battle mech warriors or dinosaurs with laser faces or even another full stack of shockingly unneeded tier rep powers.. The stage and control mechanism is welcomed.
The mechanism is far from new though. It seems like they briefly visited success on this season release. Maybe they pulled the concept out of the MMOfromYORE discount bin.

It is through repetition that we learn our weakness.

When S8 is fully launched, $0 from me at least.
