I can't be the only person who thinks this is really pushing into the territory where the money sinks are getting too aggressive, blatantly invalidating old stuff to try and push us into buying the new?

Yes, but consumers enthusiastically demand and support this type of business model.

"i-everything" walled gardens and other brand identity eco-systems are designed to take your money for marginal improvements/changes.

That MMO's should somehow occupy a unique non-P2W niche seems unrealistic.

That's a very good illustration too.... because people will jump on the shiny new i-everything bandwagon, just like they grind hard to grab the topmost rarest stuff in the game..... and in both cases it's a want not need idea.

I don't need the topmost gear to have fun in the game... and I don't need the shiniest new i-somthing/smartphone to have a good smartphone.

The other sad element is what is PWE supposed to do, they have people crying for new ships with certain elements, and then when PWE produces them they have people crying that these ships are made, and how it's powercreep..... When PWE releases new content people cry about bugs which haven't been fixed, when they fix bug they cry about wanting new content.... It's obvious that cryptic is not goingto pay heavy attention to the crying, because overall, people will cry no matter what, because everyonewants different things.... so all tehy will do is produce that which is likely to make them money... and that is okay in my book.... that's their job.

Without new things how 2 sell stuff? Without the new things being better than the old things, how 2 sell stuff? Now what I really wanna see is something that outdoes a scimitar.
    Bite your tongue.

There are several big reasons players follow carrots, one is they always have to own the best carrots, another is they want the best carrots to show off to others and if everyone had the same carrots they wouldnt be a special snowflake anymore. Another is competitive mule cart pulling(PvP) where you need the best carrots to be competitive at the top of the cart pulling. For new players these new carrots are like the old ones you dropped and the cart you are pulling squashed it.

True, and to play a F2P game one has to accept that such a system is always going to exist, and one can simply choose not to participate or participate only to a point. My argument is more that there's a line (hazy as it may be) where the game goes from acceptable levels of creep and pushiness to being outright obnoxious and intelligence-insulting about it.

The Nukara rep for example I'd consider the former. I think the way it messed with Nukara missions and clearly designed to make things more of a grind for no real player benefit was a **** move, but since its just more variety but nothing particularly game changing I could (and did) simply ignore the whole thing. But on the other hand the new Spire rep looks designed to be even more annoying, more grindy, and more expensive, and potentially more significant to game play, making us start over AGAIN instead of just using what we already worked for.

Any significant game grinds I expect to completely finish on all my alts within a couple of weeks so I can go back to doing what I want. Some mules expect to at some point reach the destination where they can sit down and relax, not be on the road endlessly. Offer the mule an apple instead of a carrot for a little variety, thats one thing. BIGGER JUICIER carrot when I've already got one though? Now you're just insulting my intelligence.

    That's what i thought.

Sure we are going to get a new way to dump currency into the game and the new toys are take a bit of time to reach, but where is the "pay to win" part?

Unless the Fleet Atrox is going to have 10 weapon slots, 3 hangars and 12 consols, there is no arguement for it (or any of the other stuff involved) being a P2W item.

Indeed, there is no real "end" to the game..... to "win" really is to have fun playing it... so really, anyone having fun playing the game is winning. And not everyone needs to pay money to have fun.... and those that do only have themselves to blame.

That's the most obvious thing I've noticed about this game. They really keep you chasing after "new things" and it's working. That's why they keep doing it. After got my JHDC, I did spend 3 million EC on Mark XII gear. Only to have the Scimitar come out and mop the floor with my JHDC. I can't begin to tell you how pissed I was, a lockbox JHDC is instantly under powered when a 2,500 zen ship comes out. I know I'm not the last person to experience this.

    Possible Solutions could be:
    A. Make the game modular, sandbox if you will, where we can do what we want to our ships. We can upgrade/downgrade the console slots/ weapon slots.

    B. Re balance everyship from the previous year. For example every ship that's classified as a "dreadnought" will have 4 fore/ 4 aft weapons + 2 hangar slots (to distinguish them from cruisers, since they have a 4/4 set up). You get the idea.

Also, all I get with my JHDC is just a bridge. I can't explore the other parts of the ship. I tell you after I got the JHDC, I refuse to fall for Cryptic's half arsed money grab attempts. All that money on lockbox keys and all I get is a bridge, they made (at least $200 off of me alone) and then a Scimitar comes out.
One day Cryptic will be free from their Perfect World overlord. Until that day comes, they will continue to pamper the whales of this game, and ignore everyone that isn't a whale.

Maybe Cryptic screws over pvp because a decent player base would see how bad it is and be vocal about it.
