The argument against this I've seen in game is that we are very limited to what can go in the tactical console slots so we cant have those expensive consoles giving only a small increase due to diminishing returns.
I wouldn't mind it, I would love to feel I can leave a couple tactical slots open to throw in one or two of the universal consoles I have. Currently if I do that you get berated like its the school yard days and told your the reason an STF is not going smoothly.
Hell bet the sales on c-store ships / lock-box keys would go up if people felt they could run those consoles for that bit of extra personal build to their ship.
Very true. When you can take a handgun and boost it to puncture a hole in the Death Star you'd say something was broken too.
Such a change would be welcome in time. Once the crowds have put away the pitchforks a few days after the patch and all the 'elite' players have posted their overly dramatic I QUIT threads (which would be funny to read I'll admit) I'm sure the majority would adjust to the new status quo and come to appreciate it.
You'll have to forgive my pessimism, but when it comes to the player community I'm always reminded of that quote from K in MIB.
A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it.
Space is far too simple, especially if all you want to do is DPS. There is hardly any depth to it.
Yes there are a lot of boff options, power options, equipment options, but at the end of the day there are only a very few that are effective for your needs (and they stand right out). Those that are effective are generally very effective.
To OP.. yes, it's just you. I am new to the game and find space combat as one of the most fun things you can do in this game. If it was any simplier, I'd probably not enjoy it as much. Ground combat is nowhere as fun, because it is too simple, to the point of 5-years old kids being able to play it. I really don't understand why people have tendencies to want their games to be ridiculously easy, with no challenge whatsoever... <.<

I don't think the build system is too complicated, the problem is that the tooltip/info system is inconsistently presented and all over the place.
For example, if I'm in ESD, thinking of buying something on the Exchange for my Space game, I have no way of looking at the effective stats of something. I have to actually go out into space and look at the power tray tooltips (which are the most comprehensive).
It ought to be possible to have tooltips always showing the effective DPS of a weapon given your own abilities, etc. And they all ought to be in a consistent format too.
I think this fiddly, inconsistent way in which the information is presented is what makes the system seem more complicated than it actually is.

This pretty much sums it up.
Once people have figured out which skills, stats and pieces of equipment are useful, it only leaves us with a very limited amount of builds, both in PvE and PvP. Sure, there will be some small degree of variation, but in the end they all pretty much look the same.
As far as complexity and depth goes, this game (especially in space combat), pretty much gets trumped by every mmo and even single player rpg out there.
