Title pretty much say it all...

What is the point of APO2, Aceton Beam level 2, Eject Warp Plasma level 2, Gravity Well level 2, Photonic Shockwave level 2 and Viral Matrix level 2???

They're weaker versions of Commander level skills that can be trained by a starbase boff trainer as opposed to your captain, who can train the best ones.

As to whether this is pointless or not, I dunno. Probably.

Its something you can slot on your Commander BOFF until you are able to get the training for APO3

the point was that those were likely the intended ones most players would use, with the level 3 variants being more rare

add minmaxing mmo players into the mix

the level 2s become obsolete within a week

Good question. All being Cmdr. skills, it seems pointless to ever slot a type 2 variant, when you could use a type 3 in its stead.

Off the top of my hat, I can think of 2 reasons for having done so:

    1) It makes it possible to sell 'lesser' (blue) boffs that have, say, VM2 instead of VM3. Or AB2 vs. AB3.

And some type 3 can indeed only be trained by Captains.

    2) They simply didn't want the type 2 abilities to be Lt. Cmdr. Like they didn't want ppl to have ATO2 as a Lt. Cmdr. ability.

I'd have to double-check, but I know GW III, and probably a good chunk of the remainder of that list, are skills that can only be trained by a player...

For example, if you're a tac and want GW III for your Aventine (the Tactical Vesta...)

    1. Find friendly enough Sci captain to train
    2. Trade him a BOff. IIRC, it has to be a tradable BOff and already unpacked...
    3. Get trained and BOff returned...
    4. Profit...

Or, you just settle with GW II until you can run the aforementioned chain...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

Yes. As others, and I, have pointed out already, some type 3 can indeed only be trained by Captains.

And sometimes the roles are reversed, even; for instance, the Cmdr. skill Energy Siphon 3 can only be trained by a boff.

This is one of the game inconsistencies that has always bothered me. Aside from being mentioned virtually no where in the game (how/where to train X ability must be learned from outside source unless that Captain or Boff trainer can train it), some Boffs aren't tradeable until being equiped, some are ONLY tradeable AFTER being equiped, some both, some neither. Some don't even do the same thing among their own kind. (Some cross-faction Boffs can be listed on exchange, others not, yet all are tradeable?) It's too much trial and error and not at all consistent. It makes making educated choices extremely difficult not to mention wastes resources if done incorrectly. BO3 is a great example. Even once you figure out that it is only trainable by another Boff, you still have to find that Boff. Might cost you 1000ec, might cost you 1mil ec. WTF!?!? Yet CRF3 can be Captain trained. No explanation given, no source for info (aside from other players who already tested it). This is NOT how Starfleet would operate.

Side note: This is one of those things that could easily be fixed (more info/text provided somewhere) yet is never given any attention as the confusion and waste on resources is in essence "good" for the game to generate more revenue, even if it is a burden and source of frustration for the actual player (which in the long term LOWERS revenue). Instead a never ending list of nerfs and "fixes" that tax or further burden the player are not for one moment neglected. Bad form, very bad form.

So realistically, you only need to have the exact number of doffs that you need. ~leadme2kirk

    ^Quoted for truth.

However, I do agree with the OP that having an Ability at Tier II is pointless when the Tier III version is on the same Rank. Same way in which getting Mk X gear is pointless with how fast you will be getting MK XI or MK XII in the short blink of an eye.
