Carrier pet question

Sorry, but I can't find this anywhere with the search function.

If you purchase carrier pets and the pet is destroyed in combat, do the pets need to be repurchased or is this an unlock like with the mainline ships?

I'm tempted to try a carrier, but the price of pets seems pretty high unless it is a permanent unlock or if they aren't actually destroyed outright very often.

hangers can put out infinite pets. just like torp launchers don't run out of torps. if your fighters die, just launch some replacements. Fighter pilots never make it to retirement, sadly...;)

My own take on it is that those "Flight Deck Officers" are mostly highly trained transporter specialists whose job is to keep a firm transporter lock on the fighter crews, come what may, throughout combat, and beam them back out of trouble when it looks like their ship's blowing up.

And the "hangar bays" are actually specialised industrial replicators for producing fighters - one of the pets blows up, the crew is transported back, and they stand very still for a while, as the replicator literally builds a new fighter around them.

Post-industrial, post-scarcity economy... machines are cheap, it's easy to build more. Skilled personnel, however, are expensive. So you take every chance you can to save the lives of your fighter pilots, but the ships themselves are pretty much disposable.

Or, you could just believe all your fighter pilots are photonic, and they're manufactured for the occasion too. That works, unless you're one of those bleeding-heart "rights for holograms" types....

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping that the 20k dilithium for these pets wasn't for a consumable.

In this case, it's pretty much canon. Have you ever counted the number of shuttles Voyager lost?
