Is there any class that benefits from being a crafter more than other classes?
Are there any crafted items that are not tradable? That is, can I concentrate on one leveling up one crafter and be able to trade off crafted items to other characters?
No class has a bonus to crafting (though i feel eng should)
Crafting is great for helping you level other toons by providing a fairly inexpensive way to have weapons leveled for your toon instead of going with random chance.
I'm a big fan of making sure i have phaser sniper rifle's for my toons and their away teams.
Inertia just means you can do Powerslides in you carrier!

1) You'd think so, but no.
2) I think the AEGIS set is account bound on pickup, and the Horta pet might be char bound, but everything else you can sell or swap or mail to yourself or whatever. I do this sometimes when leveling new characters so they have the stuff that the mission rewards don't give them.
Crafting in this game is sorely underdeveloped and definitely should be toward the top of the devs list for "Total Rework Needed Like Yesterday." One thing it is good for though is crafting low level equipment (especially energy-type tactical consoles) to sell on the exchange. If you have the patience and would rather make stuff than fly around blasting things, you can make a ton of ec that way.

The Aegis is tradeable (a fleetmate made it for my romulan[i wasn't crafty enough yet])
And crafting DOES need a major revamp.

One thing about the Aegis, if you do the currency conversions of what Unreplicatable Materials go for when sold on the Exchange, it's usually cheaper to buy the Aegis off the exchange than to craft it yourself. Might be worth looking into if that's what you're after, especially considering you have to build your research skill up first.
As a side note to shockwave65 reply: once your crafting skill is max, then it may be worthwhile to sell Aegis pieces for decent EC. the crafting event helps making the Aegis pieces less costly.
I'm sure there are other, better, ways to make EC - but doing this can help a rising Captain's ship as well. You know, give back to the community
Equipping new captains is about all Crafting is good for, it's certainly cheaper to buy the Aegis set off the Exchange than it is to train up your skill and craft it yourself. Note that it's like an entry-level endgame set, since everyone will then work on the Rep system sets once they hit cap.
Until this topic, I had forgotten crafting even existed...
Wow! So much good information. I had to read the replies a couple of times since I didn't immediately know what rep gear is vs aegis gear, but I understand where people were going with it. (ie, I'm still a newb)
I guess my desire to be a crafter is just a simple one - wanted to be able to make stuff. I also just joined a fleet and thought I could help make stuff for the guild mates. By funneling all the resources collected from my alts, I was able to get my crafter skill up to 1500 in fairly short order, so it didn't seem to be as much of a grind that I originally thought.
Anyway, thanks again for all the help and answers!

Aegis is certainly entry-level in the sense that it's easy to obtain, but when used correctly it can keep up with rep gear. Contrary to what its name implies, it's actually not that good for tanking and its shield is overall pretty worthless. The Engine and Deflector together however provide a nice bonus to your Defense rating, which is great for escorts, and the Deflector boosts your shield-related skills which is always handy. I crafted the two pieces for my Romulan when she was freshly minted Admiral and am in no great hurry to replace them. Even my Fed that's up to his eyeballs in Rep gear frequently uses them instead of that other stuff if I'm playing into a pure speed tanking escort style.
As for forgetting crafting exists... yeah. My crafting skill is up high enough to craft anything, but if I'm trying a new ship or build style and I need some different gear to test with, I usually wind up at the nearest exchange console. It's generally faster, easier, and cheaper than hauling my butt out to Memory Alpha, buying the materials, and crafting the stuff. Sadly.

If you just like to make stuff, then crafting makes wonderful and useful items up to about mark 5 or 6. In particular it is a great source of blue and purple gear with the very handy accuracy mod.
However, above mark 6 it starts to require dilithium for every item and this makes it less valuable.
There are a few exceptions like the crafted kits and consumables.
Additionally, you can combine the crafting with duty officer missions. Explore, Marauder and Science missions can give you the data samples. Then in engineering look for anything that says "experimental blahblahblah upgrade". These missions will let your duty officers create green/blue/purple (depending on sucess level) items of absolutely any kind, mark 10 and 11 are possible here.
For mark 12 consoles there is a special project and it needs engineer duty officers with very specific skills etc. If you're interested later that's something to think about.
But combining the two you can make stuff and sell it or give to your fleet and thereby help quite a few new players who can't get reputation gear yet.
Hi! Noob question I can't seem to find the answer to.
How do I craft kits?
I can craft the schematics, but the kits themselves are nowhere to be found in any of the research benches. I'm assuming the old system that is mentioned in all of the FAQs I have checked with different types of research is gone, since all my available crafting items display in every type of research station. Except, that is, for kits. I can't seem to find them anywhere. Am I missing something really obvious? Or has kit crafting been removed from the new system, and the schematics are the only remnant?

Well, first off, welcome to the forums.
Secondly, you can't craft kits anymore, although the schematics are still around. That got taken out when Season 9 hit.
Thirdly ... restarting (necro-ing) threads this old is frowned upon. If something's more than a month old it's generally a good idea to start up a new thread.
Thanks! Sorry for the necro, I haven't been on long enough to be able to start threads and couldn't find a better spot to post. Good to know that kit crafting is gone - been looking everywhere for info.
