Ever created an awesome looking Alien and wondered, "What kind of world is it from? What would their culture be like? How were they discovered?"
I did.
so what follows isnt exactly what you would call a typical Bio. More like a Species Backstory. There are some holes, but i have all the stuff to fill them in in my head, i just dont feel like writing a novel no-one will ever read in game.
I'm even considering building a foundry mission around this, just to flesh it out more.
Rithvas is a member of a race known as the Sorajek, originating from a planet in the Delta Volanis Cluster. Their world has no magnetic field to protect it from celestial radiation, and as such was thought to be devoid of life when first discovered. Only after the Starfleet Science vessel Infinite crash landed on the surface was the truth discovered. Taking shelter in caverns kilometers below the surface, the crew discovered an entire subterranean ecosystem, including the Sorjek. While the Sorajek had not developed Warp capability, it quickly became clear to the crew of the Infinite that this was because the Sorajek had no idea Space was not as barren as the surface of their world, not because their technology was insufficiently advanced. Using parts and equipment donated by the Sorajek, the Infinite's crew was able to sufficiently repair their vessel to take off. When they did so, they took Rithvas (at his vehement insistence) with them. Also of note: The Sorajek have no name for their world, simply calling it "home," so the official designation of their world was left up to the Captain of the Infinite. He chose, rather appropriately, and with the Sorajek's consent, to call it Umbra.
Sounds like an intriguing notion, I'd certainly like to read more about the Sorajek and Umbra

Hmm... I have 3 alien chars, the first is an Orion/Kriosian hybrid(fed), Mirror Universe Vorta(fed), and "wierd alien" who is apparently part Romulan but has purple skin and facial markings similar to those of Bolians.
I made up an alien race that I rather like - I don't actually play one (in fact, it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense to play one...) but I'm thinking of working them into my Foundry mission if it ever happens. Will post their backstory Real Soon Now (TM) No, seriously, it's all written but it's all jumbled up in a text file with some other things, and I want to draw a picture too.
Sounds like a good baseline for a backstory you've got there! ^-^
...I personally don't have the imagination to come up with new races/species/yadayada..
I just have Alien characters so I can be an Andorian with some minor changes in appearance, or an Andorian for the KDF. (I mean, thinking about it, some Andorians might just splinter from the Federation because it's dominated by the Humans, and to some extent, those shax Vulcans still, who are of course not on very good terms after centuries of strife with the Andorians..)
Andorians and KDF sound like a good idea to me.
My chief tactical officer on the Fed side is Andorian, and my second tactical officer is Vulcan. It keeps the fleet's RP threads.... um... interesting.
In my case it's my security officer, Dul'krah, Clan Korekh. He's Pe'khdar, a species from the Rolor Nebula that lives entirely in space habitats after they sold their post-nuclear wasteland of a homeworld to the Ferengi in exchange for getting rescued (planet's basically a giant strip mine now). Dul'krah was in the Pe'khdar military police until they joined the Federation a couple years ago, hence why I gave him a unique uniform.

Oh, and I also built a Cardassian Fed captain for a Foundry mission with the backstory that his family comes from one of the planets that changed hands the other direction when they redrew the borders in TNG.
