I am fairly new to this game and still learning the details. I just upgraded to gold to get the extra storage and other perks and plan to drop back to silver when it runs out.
I now have room to have more BOFFs join my crew. I don't have any extra slots since that is ship specific, but I can have some BOFFs that I have on "hold" join my crew.
Is there any advantage to having more BOFFs than you actually have slots to fill? I am happy with the ones I have, just wondering if there is any affect to adding ones to the crew.
This comes in to play when you have different ships and different weapons that require different Boff skills and layouts. Train certain Boffs for beam attacks on your beam cruiser, cannon attacks on your escort, and assign them accordingly. When you switch ships at spacedock, they will be all set up and ready to go. Hope this helps.
EDIT: You can also edit your Boff names to add a prefix denoting which ship they are used on. Comes in handy when you have a lot of ships and Boffs.

Hope that makes sense.
You also use your bridge officers on away missions and some people like to have a team for space and a team for ground. For example, the special Jem Haddar officer you get during the story arc The 2800 has wonderful ground combat abilities, but not space ones.
