It just takes time to get used to the new pictures. No one knew what the original pics were representing either until we learned what they were from numerous mouse-overs.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
The icons were terrible and still are terrible for the simple reason that its still difficult to notice the difference between white/green/blue/purple gear. Other games use a colored border around the whole icon. STO uses just a small glow in the bottom left which is just no good

To an extent, it's hard not to agree...however, it was far easier to tell them apart.
With the new icons, it's a tiny - itty bitty - eenie teenie - lil' square...
...it's annoying, imho.
Used to be able to see the console in a bank and know what it was and what quality it was...now, it's a case of hovering over them and grabbing the right one...
Some of them are a lot easier to understand compared to the old version. The Energy Weapon Tactical consoles are the easiest to figure out IMO. Basically it is the same console for all of them and you just have to look at the color to determine which one it is for. The color is the same as the energy weapon color so orange is phaser, purple is polaron, blue is tetryon, and red is antiproton. Extremely confusing to tell what each of the energy weapon tactical consoles were with the old icons.

See, I don't get this. There are six (eight if you count generics) of them.
I can look at black and white pictures of...
an apple
a banana
a bunch of grapes
a watermelon
corn on the cob
a head of lettuce
some broccoli
a potato
...and know what what they are.
Now it's a case of having to remember that the Green Apple is one thing, the Purple Apple is one thing, the Orange Apple is another thing, etc, etc, etc.
Does that mean I use the Blue Apple for my Blue Phasers? So I shouldn't use the Orange Apple for my Spiral Wave Disruptors?

That's an awesome sig, btw...yep, the Krenim are coming to put a foot up our asses!
That being said they DO need to be polished a bit, the rarity "Glow" is hidden by the "Glow" of the item on the icon for instance.
