This is all terribly amusing to me, as someone who remembers the furor over casting Michael Keaton ("Michael Keaton, are you kidding me??"). The more things change...

(and yes, we had the Internet back then.)
I'm jealous of you. In '88 (When Keaton was cast), the internet wasn't even something I'd ever heard of.
Not saying you didn't have it. I'm sure you did. I don't know the history of the internet. I'm just saying in my little corner of the world, we sure didn't have it.
That said, people did hate the idea of Michael Keaton. I remember tons of complaints... just not on the internet.
Could you suggest a couple of movies that fit your viewpoint? I've not seen a lot of Affleck. I have seen Daredevil which was inconsistent IMHO, some parts I really liked, others not so much. I saw him in The Sum Of All Fears, great story, but although he was okay, I thought he was the most understated of the Jack Ryan portrayers.
Cruise would make a good unbalanced villain, for the same reason that Robert Downey Jr. owned the role of an alcoholic, party-boy genius Tony Stark. Real life.
Perhaps Cruise could portray Victor Zsasz if Nolan were ever to do another "realistic" Batman film.
I'm amazed that almost no on in either of the two Batman threads has mentioned "The Town." Affleck was awesome in it and it's the film that more than anything makes me feel like he can do Batman, sans the Southie accent, obviously
I think Affleck will do a good job. People seem to be stuck on thinking about him back in his Kevin Smith, Daredevil and Gigli days but we're a decade past that and he's a much better actor now.
That said I can think of a few other names that might have been cool choices. Jeffrey Dean Morgan would be at the top of my list since they said they were looking for an "older, experienced" Batman.

Might have been referring to the dial-up bulletin board sites.
I remember wondering how a comedian like Keaton could wear the cape, since they weren't recreating the Adam West era, then I saw Keaton on an interview telling about his own doubts about playing the part, and in reading the script realizing what a tortured soul Bruce Wayne was. At that point I knew he "got" the character and would do a decent job.
I still think Jim Caviezel would make a great older Batman. More so after seeing a Person of Interest episode tonight from this past season:
John: "Give me three and a half minutes, Carter. Then you can come in."
Carter: "Are you crazy? There's ten of them in there!"
John: "Ok...four minutes."
(First guy flies out the door 10 seconds later)
How do you know no one cares what I want, did you ask every single god damn person, I think not, so shove it
My, my, such language. Do you think the Batman would approve?
(Hint: Check the sequence when the young boy is urging Batman to follow the Joker into the Tunnel of Love ride at the county fair in The Dark Knight Returns. You, ah, do read, don't you?)
Affleck is actually a much better actor than he's given credit for around here (I was going to say "than he's generally given credit for", then I remembered the fuss generally surrounding movies like Hollywoodland, The Town, and Argo.) His problems are that his early career was overshadowed by the fact that he was usually performing alongside Matt Damon, and that when he moved on from working with Matt he managed to get into a couple of crappy movies. (Blaming Affleck for Daredevil or Gigli would be like blaming Orson Welles for Transformers: the Movie or Raul Julia for Street Fighter. Even the greatest actor can only do so much when he's given drivel to work with.) I'm looking forward to seeing how well he fits the role.
Besides, he can't do any worse with it than George Clooney and Joel Schumacher...

Quoth the raven "nevermore".
I don't hold that one against George. I even think he made a decent Bruce Wayne in imitation of the caring, less troubled Wayne portrayed by Adam West. Just not the troubled Wayne that came with Michael Keaton and after. Joel and the writers, though, have only my scorn.
