Red Alert Weekend Event proposal

This past weekend a certain veteran Canadian game company known industry wide for their quality PC shooter games launched a genius weekend event for their certain 3rd person sci-fi MMO/shooter open beta game, and they've done so multiple times for that game to great success. This could translate to STO where all players are given a community-wide goal to accomplish across all factions. Apologies for the wall o' text:

+ A massive galaxy wide alert constantly on for the event weekend.
+ Examples could include an Omega Directive alert, a massive Borg transwarp conduit incursion (perhaps the long overdue return of Donatra from the Khitomer Accord STF!), an Iconian armada attempting to destroy a key Fed or KDF base, or a huge Alamo-style ground invasion similar to the Siege of AR-558 from the DS9 series.
+ Goals could involve killing or capturing a certain large number of a specific kind of target that randomly spawn during matches, defeating a key flagship in space or enemy general on the ground before time runs out (similar to Tholian Tau Dewa Red Alert), or obtaining specific items to be used in the Event (or future Crafting) reputation tab to make an item required to start a special mission to capture a valuable piece of technology or enemy agents.
+ Reward for the community's success would be the permanent unlocking of a new content zone that players can run to win dilithium and collect components to craft new super rare gear. Failure means future conflicts with the Iconians or whoever become more difficult, and no new content until the next event weekend or season or expansion, whichever comes first.

Rewards for individual captains are up in the air. Participating in a weekend event match could reward you with a special event mark, in addition to dilithium, or other item you put into a project in the Events rep tab that rewards you a special combadge or some other cool emblem for your contribution towards the community goal. Perhaps a bigger reward for grinding more for the weekend, but this shouldn't be the focus. It's about the community banding together to make the game better for everyone.

Fleets should get a new Events "holding" tab in which all fleets race each other to see who can contribute the most Event marks before the weekend ends. There could be a leaderboard system that shows the top 20 or so fleets. Those on the 20 by weekend's end get a special reward such as a fleet-wide mark boost that lasts 24 hours or so that gives bonuses towards all marks earned for all members of those fleets, or a free cosmetic enhancement for the starbase/embassy/mine/etc.

The mission journal could include a whole number or percentage counter that shows how close the community is towards accomplishing the goal.

I decided to write about this idea after the announcement of Cryptic giving free C-Store stuff to us this week. I felt it was too easy. I think they should have done something special so that we could have earned them instead. A weekend event would have made the freebies feel all the more special.
