So I've been messing around with tactical for the longest time. Then a friend convinced me to go Science. I had a misconception that the Science Vessels would be akin to the healer class....great at heals...not so much on damage.
I couldn't have been more wrong. I have been tearing through Battleships like they were paper!
It was slow going until I reached Captain and now...wow.
Space: Gravity Well I and II. I pop disable engines, then GW II and then the debuff on the enemies ship that increases my dps. I watch a "boss" ship go down to 50 percent hull in 8 seconds. Wait 10 more seconds, pop GW 1 and watch it get destroyed...it's shields were still at 100% when it blew up.
Ground: (sorry Im not good with the ability names) but I have two other science officers. We all have tricorder (dps against the enemy) and the radiation II. We all pop em..and 10 of the MOBs just drop with very little fire fight....it makes my teams of plasma II and Photon grenades II look like a lvl one wooden stick.
This isn't proof that escorts are 'better' than Science ships, just that the PVP mechanics are terminally broken.
Damage is the basis of any form of success in STO. PVE or PVP. If you do not do anything to contribute to that, then you're a liability to the team, esp. in high-end PVE where time is ticking. A team of Escorts would absolutely rip apart an STF compared to a team of Cruisers or SCI Vessels. And those Escorts would quickly, and easily get the optionals because, hey, if in doubt, pour more fire and torpedoes into the targets. Not saying a Cruiser / SCI Vessel heavy team cannot do it, but they will be finishing with less time left, and any mistakes would make them take longer and risk not making optionals.
Escorts, SCI Vessels, and Cruisers all get the job done. However, when it comes to getting things done quick and in an efficient manner, Damage is king, and Escorts are supreme (still) in STO, simply because they can quickly apply the damage the best in the game. Cruisers and SCI Vessels just take too long, or are along to act as healbots for Escorts.
This isn't proof that escorts are 'better' than Science ships, just that the PVP mechanics are terminally broken.
Not really about PvP either, in PvE science is just a weak class. very usefull though but solo or in full teams of just science compared to full teams of engi or tac they can be a joke compared to what they should be. the Trinity is broken when PWE/Cryptic give no love to Science and the trinity could make the game awesome.

That's all fine and dandy but it's so boring!
I have a tac klink in a cannon equipped BoP, the usual cookie cutter damage dealer. I can only fly it in small doses because I get so bored just blasting away enemies in seconds, that isn't a fight, it's a formality - might as well use an auto-resolve feature!
That's why I have a tetryon beam mirror qin as my 'fun ship' - it's a great little brawler, not the best damage it's capable of but it's just so fun to fly. My fed main is an engineer too, the class that is universally bunked by everyone and I always have fun flying cruisers with him.
There is nothing wrong with mixing it up, and if the OP enjoys the career and the 'performance' then there isn't a problem.

Not saying the other captain types and ship types can't do the job... they can. But again, when it comes to efficiently and easily finishing a high end PVE mission, you need to melt the enemy quickly. This is all forced due to mission timers, and also how much more simple and quickly it is to pop a bunch of TAC buffs and start ripping through with some sort of combination of Cannon Rapid Fire, Beam Overload, High Yield Torpedo.
The vet ship can easily make for a nice hybrid between tactical and science since it regenerative mode has bonus to aux power, and in either mode you have the ltcmdr level universal station that can slot any boff...
If you want to make your Sci Guy even more deadly, think off him as a support ship.
While you immobilize and damage with your GW's the tacs have a field day pouring damage on.
This goes for every Sci ability from top to bottom. Sci ships can do a lot more than DPS. By neutralizing the enemies' buffs you leave them vulnerable to your other teammates' DPS producers. Want to double the damage done by your escort buddy? Use Tachyon Beam on that engine-run foe and your tac is hitting bare hull for his entire alpha strike. Sure, you can strip a shield and do hull damage too, but a science ship will never produce raw damage like a tac. (Don't try this in PvP. Tachyon Beam is worthless against a player-built ship.)
Science ships can solo, there is no doubt. But where they come into their own is in the 'magic' department. Disable, hold, disrupt, and otherwise make life miserable for those enemy ships and the rest of your team can exploit the opportunities you give them.
Sci/Sci is difficult to play in PvP because the nerf bat hit them pretty hard back when players were complaining how OP they were. But there are useful abilities and most of them involve teamwork to make the most of. Learn to be a support ship and you will far exceed anything you can do solo in a Sci.
The vet ship can easily make for a nice hybrid between tactical and science since it regenerative mode has bonus to aux power, and in either mode you have the ltcmdr level universal station that can slot any boff...
Just saying...
Still, without sensor analysis and the ability to use GW3, the vet ship is not a good science ship choice, its not a sci ship at all. Just because it has a lt com universal boff station does not make it a sci or engineer vessel. Thats why i hate to see science in escorts or engineers in escorts..Tactical was designed for escorts, they are our "rogue dps", engineers were designed for cruisers, they are our "tanks/Heal", science were designed for science vessels, they are our "CC/Heal". Each of these captain types have special abilities or access to special abilities via skill points that make them special, and using a ship that lacks the proper BOFF seating pretty much nullifies the ability to use those special skills, like GW3 or DE3, etc.
A Tactical officer in an escort with his/her Attack Pattern alpha 3 using DHC's is going to do WAY more dmg than any sci or engineer in that same escort could ever hope of doing. This game is based on a DPS race, so this matters...unless Cryptic changes the way things are going.
Romulan science captain should be in the fleet Ha'nom or mirror sci version. Anything other than that is a waste of sci captain abilities.
A Tactical officer in an escort with his/her Attack Pattern alpha 3 using DHC's
I will agree that the engineer would have no chance but with sensor scan science can do pretty well if not slightly better (I haven't read the tooltip recently but I believe it to be -50% target resistances)
As for the whole topic, Tacticals run science ships better than Science, that NEEDS to chance.

...no, just, no.
First of all, here isn't a single healing ability that can be used under a commander sci boff, but there are two that can be used under a commander engi boff. So which ship makes the better healer: sci vessel or cruiser?
Second of all, there is no boff ability that is exclusive or advantageous to a particular class. A boff with FAW3 and APO3 will perform exactly the same under any captain that spent their skill points the same way.

And your cruisers probably all use the same exact DOFFs, and 2 aux2bat, don't they ? Otherwise, they would be average at most. Cruisers are not powerful by themselves, the combinations of DOFF they use is everything. Truth is, they use BOFF skill for the DOFF power, there is no reason to run 2 aux2bat or directed energy modulation, especially in eSTF against unshieleded targets.
Escorts can have different setup, and still do a lot of damage. Also, they don't need 20mil DOFF to reach 10K DPS.
Back to the topic, I play a sci, and was disapointed by the lack of damage from exotic abilities. The only good damaging ability is GW3, tractor beam repulsor also have a high damage output on a fixed target, but otherwise it's just a CC.
However, using Sci powers to increase the efficiency of your tac skill is awesome. GW3 + sensor scan then CSV + AP:B will melt a group of mob. As support DPS/heal they are awesome.
I used the breen ship that way for a while (no GW3 sadly). Now using the Vesta, which is fun (running 130 aux power, aux cannon...).
And not like escort's do not have a prefered build as well. Thats calling the pot black when you are the kettle. BTW I have both a tac flying an escort and an engi flying a cruiser as well as a sci flying... you guessed it a science ship. Plus 4 other toons which one is a KDF carrier capt, 1 is a rom tac doing alpha strikes with cloak and 2 who are lvl 18 and have no real plans yet. I am not a cruiser only capt.

You'll see what we mean when we say they are all pretty much immune and that these skills need to be changed to exotic damage when their 75% immunity makes them useless, not to mention all of the new escort behaviors in PVE where they just fly around freely like no-ones using tractor beams or GWII or III on them or anything, heck even the well that the Rom skills create doesn't do much to hold ships in place.
Try using 2x Gravity Well 1 with a Purple Aftershock DOff and Viral Matrix 3 with some combo of it's spread proc and re-apply Doff for the lulz. Maybe Polarons with rapid fire/FAW to further slow/disable people and throw a Tractor Beam on there.

I agree with the OP that Sci is much more fun to fly and still can dish out decent damage. Back when I started, I started with an Engi, and a Sci as a second char. By now I have also a Tac VA (all FED btw) and even though the engi is still nice, the Tac does the highest dps (FTER), the Sci is still by far the most fun thing to go for.
