I just upgraded my Klingon toon from a classic Neg'var to a new Bortesqu Tactical Cruiser and - OMG isn't it shiny! I wouldn't mind so much about that if the colour palette had some effect on it from looking anything other than a space ship with a Borg paint job for hanging at Christmas off a crystalline entity tree.
If you saw my ship you'd never guess it was supposed to have red Orion patterns all over it. The colour patterns do not work on it at all.
I'm still getting use to the workings of it and until I suss a suitable build, I can't say as I care for how it comes. At the moment it may as well have a sign-on saying "shoot at me", which the paint job effectively does.
If you saw my ship in battle, you'd probably want to shoot it, even if we were on the same side.
I'm fairly new here, but I didn't have a problem like this customising any other ship. Am I missing something or is this really how it is supposed to look - which is like one of those chrome metallic models you might find on a Commanding Officer's office on the desk or on a shelf?
IMO any Klingon ship Captain worth his salt would kill the Ship yard staff if they offered him a ship that looks like this.
As I say, if I am missing something, please educate me. If not, then please can we have some working options for the external look of the thing.
At the moment I am considering asking for my Zen back...
There is currently a bug in ship customization where colors don't work at all. (True for all ships, not just this one.)

Possibly the shield giving that effect, or it could also be the glitch people are talking about. I have the same glitch affecting my Federation tactical officers mirror advanced escort. the material and color will not change.
Klingon ships, as a general rule, do tend to be designed with a somewhat. . .less reflective look to them. They don't stand out like Federation ships do, with the white chrome paint and whatnot. Most of our hull colors are pretty dark colors, with the occasional option of that really weird-looking aqua color that I've never used on a ship because it's distinctly. . .weird. That's the only hull material that will really make your ship stand out and 'shine', I think.
I think it's a general consensus amongst the community that we could use more customization options. Some of the Federation ships get 5-8 different options, while the most I've ever seen on a KDF ship is 3-4. We also have less options for 'modular parts', so our ships tend to follow the same basic shape as dictated by the default model. Our color palette is also limited and doesn't really stand out on the types of hulls that we usually have.
Then, of course, there's the issue with the customization bug that we're having now, making things difficult. They've yet to address this, probably because it's not affecting the Federation players (as far as I can tell, anyways, haven't seen them talking about it). When problems start messing with the Federation side of things. . .that's when Cryptic suddenly seems to start caring and start fixing things. What an amazing coincidence, eh?
You haven't got the shield visuals enabled, do you? It carries over to the customiser and some are very shiny.
Seems I did. I didn't even know that option existed. Newbs, huh? Thanks for the HU.
Now I have a green ship with red blotches. Hmmm...back to the Shipyard to see if I can sort that now.
Addendum: Success: Now I can see the material, it was just a case of changing that to something more suitable. Much better.
As for the ship shield visuals, I would never have worked out that out on my own. Aside from not realising you could do that with your ship shields (I doubt I've ever right-clicked a shield in place before to find that option), unlike your character's personal shields/armour, the effect itself did not indicate what it was.
I'd venture to say then that it's not a very good effect.
And yet the bug is real enough, with patterns not showing colors even with no shields at all. YMMV.

It is. My new Vesta is that horrible blue colour because i can't change anything...
The only ship that colors work for on my Federation character is the new Corvette.
Honestly I fly FDCs and the only thing about the ships appearance that is customizable are the windows. Seriously even the Fleet Corsair can't pick the fleet hull material, its got Orion material and that's it. Picking a colour does nothing at all. Never did.
It'd be nice if my ship had anything customizable about it at all. To be fair its one of the most beatiful ships in game and Orion Material is nice, but I'd love to put my own finger print as it were somehow on it.
i have the same problem with my Galaxy class. It's as chrome colors. the pattern is the original Galaxy. in graphics i have all activate and all ultra. please whats happen??
dear sweet merciful necros. (white lantern ring blast here) /necro.

You are very welcome. You know I found out? I told somebody the ship customiser was bugged and all skins were the same and they put me right .....

Go to your ship customizer. On the far left is a list of presets. Select one. Colors should now work correctly. Everytime they stick, just repeat.
