Risian Birds - are tufted senior colors supposed to revert?

It has been noticed that tufted adults have brilliant and unique plumage, as shown by this picture linked in the dev blog. However, once these birds are raised to 'senior' status, their colors go back to the colors of a tufted fledgling. Is this intended? If so, what is the reasoning behind this?
