Yet, for folks that are not so casual, eh? What can they do with that gear? There's PvP...
...and yeah, it's only going to get worse.
So folks can rag on the OP all they want...ignorance must be bliss.
I think its more a case of not wanting to believe what is clear to everyone that is willing to face it.
They don't want to believe it because it means there's an expiration date on the game they've come to care about very deeply. For some, admitting it would force them to accept that said expiration date has already passed; for others it'll mean its getting close....
I can't say I blame them. Every new announcement I worry "will this be the one that pushes so far it will make me leave in disgust?". So far it hasn't happened, but I can't help but worry. I LIKE flying ships around space, I LIKE the flimsy ground combat in STO, I don't want it to one day push me away. So far I just roll my eyes, but who knows what they will concoct tomorrow in a feeble attempt to get more cash out of churn players?
I can really empathise with you here. In what I hear of other games, there is powercreep, but powercreep is typically accompanied with new, harder content. On the other hand, here....there's the powercreep, but it's not accompanied with tougher content. I think that the main test was Hive Space Elite. For all its oneshots and bugs, it is still the only piece of endgame content with a boss actually utilising its abilities.
However, it's nearly deserted, and only good premade teams can attempt it with any chance of success.
This, I believe, pretty much confirmed how Cryptic sees the game - it's a casual MMO, which I know sounds like an oxymoron, but there you have it. I only play because I've got quite a bit of time invested into here, and partly because it's easy to stick around as a casual player and collector. And at least my fleetmates and OPVPers are quite fun to chat with most of the time.
However, if one looks at it as a casual game apart from PvP - it actually doesn't look so bad. Kind of Farmville-ish, you know? Log in, do a race or two, do an ISE, chase epohhs, cash in your doff assignments, queue up rep projects, collect a few shinies.....yep, sounds like a casual game to me.
Hive is deserted because the rewards aren't there. Why run it when you can do ISE and Cure space in the same time for double the marks. CC was another good example, in the end they just nerfed it to easy town instead of actually have the rewards match the time and organisation required to do it successfully.

That last part...it's kind of funny, because the gf's computer is next to mine. She plays Farmerama. And yeah, on more than one occasion it's been hard to miss the similarities.
She also plays several Facebook games, Candy Crush and things like that. In a twisted sense, the combination of the two has left me feeling like STO is some sort of Facebook game. You've got the social thing, sure - many MMOs have that 3D chat in a particular IP thing going for them.

...and yeah, that's STO. A few complaints, a TRIBBLE load of fluff, and somebody actually saying that flying is too hard... /facepalm.
But wait, that's biased - it's the General section - what would one expect? But that's okay, hit up the various gameplay sections to read more about costumes. It's Barbie & Ken in Space!
Yeah, some of my frustration is getting the better of me - the game is what it is. It's got a growing appeal to the casual player and that's a good thing for Cryptic (and even the Star Trek brand). Can't really fault them for that in the least.
But yeah, I can no longer say that I don't play any of those silly Facebook/Farmville-ish games and the rest...as long as I keep logging in to do my 5 minutes of flying per toon so I can get my Fast & Furious ships for my guys... /cough It's surreal, that I'm actually kind of embarrassed to be playing STO. I'm no hardcore gamer at this stage in life, but c'mon - really - how did I end up playing a game for toddlers, tween girls, and grandparents?

STO might be extremely casual but I still like the gameplay. One of the problems is the freedom you have. You can build you starship the way you want, with the weapons/abilities ans consoles you like. For some people that allows efficient min/maxing and for others it just gives them a chance for epic failure.
These days you see games like GW2 were every char has one healing slot forcing you to take a heal. Or d3 where you have to unlock your quickbars in the options because you are severly limited in your build otherwise.
These days games tend to limit options because they know the average gamer will fail if you give him a chance. Also most games do not have real support classes anymore. If you like to play healers most modern games are a nightmare.
STO rewards teamplay. There is a lot of healing and support. There are different builds and options. It is not a giant clone army where every cleric is the same etc. And it is Star Trek, I like Star Trek.
I started playing STO in the open beta and while I do take breaks I always come back. Yes it is a lot of grind, there is no real challenge in any pve content and pvp does not get improvements but in the end I do love the gameplay. I do love the ships. Maybe someday pvp will get something, maybe not. I will take breaks from STO in the furture but I am pretty sure I will always come back.

Wanted to add to what I said last, because too much frustration was bleeding through from glimpsing that flying is too hard thread (not the first one, probably won't be the last one on it)...
Visually, STO keeps getting better and better. The artists, ship/environment/etc, keep raising the bar. They're doing an awesome job. Story/content, the Romulan stuff was the most Star Trek like content that I've experienced in STO. It was great. There is a lot about STO that's...well, to be blunt...pretty damn fantastic and only getting better. They're doing a good job there and deserve kudos.
But then there's the System folks. And guess what? They're doing a great job as well. What? Am I insane? No, not in the least...I honestly believe they are. That's crazy, eh? Only if you do not consider the intended audience of the game.
I'm not their intended audience, so obviously there's the "are they smoking crack?" thought process going on there, lol...ahem, sorry guys. But if I step back from it for a moment, and look at all those posts out there - all the masses of folks out there - the intended audience for the game...then there simply is no denying that the System guys are doing a great job as well.
That's the simple kicker of it...outside of various bugs, etc - the majority of my complaints would be compliments if I were not me. If I was a member of that intended audience, then I'd be offering to buy them beers instead of taking more Excedrin from the /facepalms.

3) The expert: "I'm a really good PvPer. I do really well, unless I'm playing against cheese, which is anything that requires me to use an ability outside of RSP to live. I see hackers everywhere."
4) The elite: "I PvP a lot. I don't really consider any ability to be cheese, because I understand enough about them that I can get out of that kind of stuff pretty easily on my own or with the help of my team.
