I am so addicted to flying around Risa. It adds a layer of depth and interaction that I simply haven't seen in this game, but I've been wanting since SWG closed.
Please enable our floaters for all planet surfaces! I'll be grinding out the purple jetpack just to have the fastest one, but I would love for the investment to go further then just being limited to Risa.
Awesome work on the appearance and animation of the floaters! I love them!
I guess I am stupid. I see people going up down and all around with floaters but I cant make it do that. if i fly over water I drag in it. how do you gain and lose altitude and please be very specific because I saw a post that said face down to go down and then forward but how do you rotate to face down?

Switch to mouse control using the "B" key. Then use space to go up. and W+the mouse cursor to move in the direction you want. For example, to go down, hit "W," and move the mouse towards the ground. Hope this helps.
the space works to go up all the time, but down is tricky. is there a key to use for down not in shooter mode?
Not as far as I can tell. I'd suggest practicing in shooter mode. Its a lot easier to run the races using that mode, since you can aim exactly where you want to go. There really should be a "down" button though. Every other game that I've played that had first person flying (usually through a cheatmode) had "down" set to the crouch command.
How about you allow the floater to work like the snow boots? Increased run speed in non combat maps without the ability to go up. Seems like a good compromise. You can use the floaters outside of Risa, and the devs don't have to put a room on maps.
ok this has been addressed b4 so many times in the forums and ill explain the story. when people wanted the so called "floaters". cryptic didnt want these in the game because it would change ground combat completely and make it exploitable and that it would show how broken the maps are(btw why are the maps brokedn in the 1st place cryptic?). then this came along and in a recent dev blog clearly states that the floaters can only be used on risa because it is the most basic map in the game, however tacofangs said that the devs want to put the floaters avil on other maps but it would take time to refit the map, but this can only be done slowly, as cryptic is already busy as it is.
I dont think it would take much and just add proper clipping to the current maps, and allow floaters on non com worlds for jollies.
Simple fact is if most of us are going to grind up 1000 favors, or spend tons of ec on them, there better be more stuff to do after the 28 day or w/e event is over.
Some "racing dailies" you can do on different worlds would be nice, post best times kinda thing, get some crx some dil etc. And you could instance that by porting people into a race area with their jetpack equipped. Even if you are not allowed on the world map.
the right mouse buuton and nothing seems to work. still trying to get down without shooter mode. when I say down I mean lower not hit the ground. mostly for the high fly event.
My counter-argument to the 'Ground Combat Exploit' argument against more floater usability would be to limit it to planetary social maps (First City, Starfleet Academy, Vulcan, Bajor, etc. - not places like ESD, Drozana, DS9, and other space stations).
Personally, it'd make that annoying Diplomatic side-mission for the Romulan ambassador on Vulcan more worth doing since it'd be easier to reach that one monk at the top of the mountain and get back down with a floater than all that running...
"If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross; but it's not for the timid." -- Q, TNG: "Q-Who?"
^Words that every player should keep in mind, especially whenever there's a problem with the game...

back down you can fall ... or just jump ... without need of Jetpack
but back to topic: i want to use this Jetpack everywere but not in PVP like its now ... maybe some PVP flying Ground Maps were you can fly and shoot same time (shootermodus controling only)
18 Cpt on the way to 60: 14 of them are already 50 or over 50, one is 60 and 3 almost 43

This ^^^ and increasing the jump height while using them in regular maps.
I've been tempted on a few occasions to purchase the really high end floaters, but felt that if they'd only be good at Risa, I was better off getting the costume options instead.
I will say this, floaters are a load of fun, and the Risa event map is BEEEEAAAAUUUUUUTIFULLL !
Thank you Cryptic ! I really feel like I've gotten away when I'm there !
I'd really like to see more maps like this that you can use with the floaters, maybe on Earth maybe ? Like Yosemite .............. Or maybe a tour of San Franscisco, Star Fleet headquarters, maybe on some of the known worlds like Vulcan, or Andoria too. pretty please !
There are a lot of problems that come from allowing people to fly (trust me, I've worked on 2 separate Superhero MMOs). But Risa was built with this in mind, so it should be good to go. It would be a considerable amount of work (and a billion bugs) if we allowed you to fly your 'floater' everywhere else in the game.
I'm telling you, there is a ton of work in trying to retrofit an existing map, that was not designed for flying characters. It's not something I want to do, and I really hope we don't head down that rabbit hole.
It is not easy to convert existing maps to flying maps. When a map is created, they make it a certain size and the map just stops. If you get to a certain height, then there is absolutely nothing beyond the next hill. So you would see a flat plain or an unrendered space depending on how they deal with it. Also various buildings might need to be modified since there is no need to add a wall or roof for some buildings if they are only seen from certain angles.
Only reasonable method is to limit its height to jumping height so it is a better version of the frosted boots.
So why do they have us get the better jetpacks if we're not going to be allowed to use them... Oh... that's right.... it's PWE who doesn't think things through. We pay earn 1000 favors to get the jetpack and then we can't use it?
If we only needed them to earn pearls to get that Corvette, then the jetpacks should have been issued and told that they would expire at the end of the event. Other than that, we've earned them!

There is no reason to buy anything more than the Basic and most people know this after running the Flying High mission once or twice. The Superior is for those that like to farm for favors to get the various costumes. Why purchase the Snowball weaponry if we can only use it for a month and a half? It is the same deal with the Floaters. Floaters will be used for next year's summer event and there will be some new content for it. Also, like the Frosted Boots, there is a chance that they will be usable on other maps, but with some serious restrictions. So hover on other maps and fly on Risa.
Making the floaters available on other maps wouldn't be fair to people with a Ferasan or Caitian character. Their increased jump heigth will be totally useless.
People should stop complaining. It was fun to have the floaters on Risa, enjoy them while you can.
And as for the 'We paid a lot of favors for those floaters and now we can't use them anywhere'-reason some people are putting up: you could have known from the start that these floaters would only work on Risa during this event. So if you're going to spend a lot of favors to get a better one, it's your own choice, but don't pretend like you've been mislead or something. Again, it would be far more unfair for those people that paid a few hundred Zen to unlock Ferasans/Caitians if these things are made available everywhere.
Also, like the Frosted Boots, there is a chance that they will be usable on other maps, but with some serious restrictions.
But we can use the frosted boots pretty much everywhere except combat. I'd be quite happy with that with the jetpacks. (Although a few maps where we could use jetpacks in combat would be interesting...)

space bar raises you. To move and go down, try holding both mouse buttons and moving the mouse, it will move your character.
Comments
however, if enough people want it. they could theoretically add it into future maps.

Hold RMB to turn your character (including up or down), push W on the keyboard. You don't need Shooter Mode at all.
Or just turn off the jetpack. You'll drop in a few seconds.

EDIT: We can edit our starships colors, why not the floaters?

What thread? Did PWE answer, or just another player?
They could easily do it for non-combat maps like the asteroid, SFA, Risa (normal), etc.

I became a LTS because I love Star Trek, not because of my opinion about the current caretaker of this Star Trek.
