I am pretty new and my first char (Fed Tactical) just made it to 50. I am flying a mirror escort right now. I like the escort role for now and am not interested in science or cruiser ships. (Maybe later when I get good at this role, but that's long term.)
I want to work toward a better ship. I don't need the absolute best of the best, but I'd like to have something that would make me more effective in STFs. I am not really interested in PVP.
Question: Between the fleet ships and the zen store ships which escort do your recommend I work towards? I am not interested in paying 280 million ec for a Jem Hadar attack ship. I can afford to get some zen, and am in a fleet so I can work toward a fleet ship if that is the better choice.
I personally would go for the fleet defiant, I have one and love it, so much so that my fleet patrol escort is gathering dust. Have a look at the ships tool tips and see which boff slots you would prefer, the fleet Prometheus for example is a bit more sci oriented so you can have gravity well on there, combine that with Aoe attacks = lots of fun
fleet ships are better but zen store ships come with great stuff. ive payed for zen store ships on all 5 of my chars and then gone n got the same fleet ship for extra console slot + hull.
i would get the defiant or multi-vector if i was you but it depends on style of play.
one thing dont waste beams on tac ship its a waste of of the maxium dps
If you love escorts, the Fleet Defiant is the ship for you.
If you want something that take a little more of a pounding, the Fleet Patrol escort is a good alternative.
If you want to tip-toe towards science, the Fleet Advanced Escort (Prometheus) may be up your alley. (You can put Gravity Well I on that ship and do all sorts of nasty things to your enemy.)
If you like the idea of a carrier, and still want all the firepower of an escort with a bit of tankiness, look no further than the Armitage. This C-store ship also comes with the most hilarious console in the game - the Torpedo Point Defense System. (Or as I call it, The Button That Makes Everybody Die.) Just make sure your energy weapons and tactical consoles match whatever type of hangar pet you equip - phasers for the peregrines, or plasma if you upgrade to scorpions. The fleet version unlocks with a tier 5 Starbase but does not come with the console.

Also the jack of all trade - the science escort Vestas, especially the tactical version. If yiou do not have a good fleet or do not have enough time to bribe a fleet to get a fleet ship, Vesta could be a better choice, especially sicne shield tanking is more important than hull tanking in this game.
Technically it is a science vessel, but it's a cross of everything.

If you want something better than your mirror escort, and you want to keep flying escorts, then only the fleet or lockbox ships would qualify.
The escorts from the c-store (with the exception of the Andorian escort), are en par with your current ship and the other free RA-level ships and wouldn't be a step up-, rather than sidewards quality-wise. Fleet ships are a tier above them. They have better hull, better shield modifiers and an additional console slot.
Although I don't have it myself - Fleet Defiant looks very good. Albeit the mirror escort is very good as it stands for now
I've bought ships for my characters (grumbles something about his Romulans not being able to use the Andoran Charals ;p) and love how most can be used by your other characters! But - when I look at the ship procurements - I do see that I can get a fleet Defiant or Fleet Patrol for fleet credits, and 4 fleet ship modules...
BUT if you buy the 'original' version of that ship - it will only cost 1 fleet ship module instead of 4. So that might be a thing to consider, and if you do go that way - make sure you purchase the right ship Going that also lets you obtain that ship for your other characters too!
The free ship from the Risa event that just started looks to be a monster of an escort, with 10 consoles, a turn rate of 21(!), and a great boff layout. Never overlook a good freebie.

My 2 cents anyway

By the way I just figured out there are two and I have mirror patrol escort, not the mirror advanced escort if that makes a difference.
Thanks.

mirror patrol escort = advanced escort
mirror advanced escort = patrol escort
There are 2 different skins really that's all
I think the mirror ships also have a ensign Boff that's different than the "prime" version.
