For some reason, the game thinks it's a good idea to invite low-level players (below level 10) to fight the Borg in 'Distress Call' and War Zone events. I thought, 'Oh, well I guess it wouldn't send me that distress call, even after I've clicked 'Not Now' several times, if it didn't think I stood a chance against a Tactical Cube'. Even with that 'You are now fighting at Lvl 44' (whatever that means), I can't do anything with Mk II Phaser weapons. So, you know, a preliminary screening for weak equipment before sending me that call would be just dandy.
'You are now fighting at Lvl 44' means that the damage of your weapons have been temporarily upgraded to be equivalent to a Level 44 player, as well as your ship. At the same time, a Level 50 VA character will be downgraded to a Level 44 player, just to be fair...
If you are having problems, then there must be other factors involved besides weapon performance. (say, experience in space battles...)
this scaling up works perfectly for ground combat, where there are all slots the same for all levels and kits powers are not that important.
in space you lack, BOFF slots, weapon slots, console slots...pretty important stuff for performance.
so, the scaling works for ground, but completely not for space.
same problem with fleet alerts...but they are so hideously easy, that even 1 good player can carry a grp.
personally i think that scaling is ok, when you grp with a friend or a grp with lower/higher people, but scaling in PUG is stupid.
the red alerts should be only for level 40+ and the fleet alerts, starbase blockade, should be level gated. one for each tier.
Leech off the experienced players too (like moi,) when we decode to go in there, looking for the 'This Far, No Farther' accolade/title. At least you'll get skill points and such, while not always able to take down a borg cigar (V'ger.)
Otherwise, just keep doing the normal content for your level, and get to better ships, as fast as you can. (Unless you enjoy the content, the take your time, to get to your next ship tiers, as fast as you can.)
Get a bio neural torpedo and stay 12km away you CAN kill a tactical cube
Hey, that's great, but where is a lvl 8 player going to get one of those to bring to the fight? I don't have weapons that can kill borg, regardless if we're the same level or not.

The problem is that every time I get called in to one of these things, all the other players are as weak as I am, not just because of the scaling, but because they've only progressed as far as I have, if only a little more or less. There's no one to leech off of because no one stands a chance. If the game took into account that we don't have Borg-killing weapons, and maybe temporarily replaced our weapons or gave us buffs that lasted the whole fight, that'd be different.

Well several ways
They come in lock boxes
Some are on the exchange
suggestion would be to not click the glowy red button unless your sure you can handle it.
if you want to attempt it, go ahead but it is usually recommended that you wait until T2-3 to actually start them, by then you got some experience, descent gear, a few more weapon and BO slots.
the reason they did is this way is because its easier to allow everyone at all levels into it via level scaling than create separate versions of the event for all ranks.
because each sector block would have to be gated to a certain level range, since there are accolades given for each sector block, if they didn't allow all players access it wouldn't be fair to those who have out leveled a certain sector block.
Space level scaling has always been horribly broken. Even adjusted to levels a player or npc 20 levels different is dead in a single volley, boff slots or set equipment isn't even relevant.
I think this event is a choice to enter into it. There is no real problem with the event at all, so if it's a challenge you are unable to overcome (yet) then choose not to do it.
Sure, the game invites you to play the event, but do you walk through every open door?
Try not to aggro the nasty cubes? On the boss just stick to shooting down plasma torps so the big guys don't take as much damage?Throw what little buffs/debuffs you have?
There is squishy probe trash mobs there for a reason you can kill or tank those.
You can still contribute at level 10 just don't be an idiot and try to kill cubes and adopt a support role.

Thats what I did anyway.
This would be a great stratagem if the objective weren't to eliminate a number of the nasty cubes.
This is my point. The game shouldn't even show me the glowy red button unless it's sure I can handle it.
unfortunately, if they d that, a nice way to get a head start on the omega reputation grinding would be taken away of lower level players. each day you can farm like 15 marks from each of the sector blocks every day. so if you like to casually play and in no hurry to get to level 45 to start running STF's that's.... 210 marks assuming i counted correct and their are 14 sector blocks. so if people want to do intermittent griding during level ups, they can net a lot of marks using these events.
unfortunately like i said earlier, the only real way to "gate" tese, would cut them off from people outside the range, unless they forced higher levels to level down to match the instance, which would still put them at an overpowered advantage. There is no way to properly balance these for every single level range in game, without cutting off a lot of players from ones outside their range.
Well, somebody has to busy themselves taking down all those pesky spheres; might as well be the Mirandas. Your can have fun buzzing around and picking those off.
In a smaller ship, I last a little longer against the big V'ger looking thing if I fly into range, empty my forward weapons at 10km, then bug out real fast, and then go in for another pass when my shields are back up. Your ship isn't made to stand there a slug it out with some of those Borg vessels, so try hit-and-run tactics. You might get in a few decent shots and survive to the end of the fight without respawning.
Don't click the button unless you want the experience. I was entering the borg battles when I was about rank 20 or so, and had some nifty gear. Yes you can't do the outright business like higher rank players but I enjoyed the experience of team work and doing my bit. The fact I was destroyed a few times and didn't have the hitting power of other players didn't bother me.
I think too many STO players get wrapped around the axle of the games stats and mechanics, its not about that. Its about enjoying the STO universe and the team work and ultimately gaming freedom that this game provides.
Don't click the button unless you want the experience....
Exactly,
When I first started playing, I thought "I'm a Starfleet officer, I"m SUPPOSED to answer red alerts".
Then I'd bravely fly in full shields like a good Starfleet captain and..
Game: "kaboom, you just got blown up would you like to respawn now?"
Me: "WTF, I just got here".
Then I realized that it's just a general invite to play a game and there will be more just like it. If I'm on my way to do something else, I usually just keep flying. Still, it's decent ship operations practice outside the storyline with no penalty for losing.

This.
Besides, the VA in the Fleet ship is going to do all of the work for you. Just keep the probes off their back.
Also, go park in front of the plasma torp launcher. You'll die a lot, but you'll kill the boss off as well.
