I tend to keep import communications with friends long over a year on my email in addition to items. As for backing the emails up, I was not aware that there was such a system to back up the emails. If there really is one, I would have liked to known how to do it.
To keep my items safe (crosses fingers), I am placing my items in my bankers' banks.
I am not one who likes limits in a game when it comes to items.
Anyway...has anyone else had this issue?
Dude, just use e-mail or Facebook like most people do to deal with friends.
i seem to have lost items too.. its not my old emails tho..
i have about 10 or so emails that say an exchange item has expired.. yet there is no item in my email.
i guess those items are just gone
good job.. the mail system was not broken until they decided to change it.

Where are they going to keep their items if I am using their storage? How do I access the items when I need them if the player is offline. There is no recourse if they leave the game and I am out those doffs/items. Relying on another individuals isn't exactly the most reliable or secure mechanism and is not really a legitimate substitute for a mechanism I had access to 24/7 when I needed them.
I deleted all my mail (only about 50 or so) from my Champs account and then they fix it the next day. :P
I don't think it would have bothered me so much if not for the FLASHING OMG EMERGENCY MUST FIX NAOW! mail indicator. I loath the DOff indicator for the same reason.
This is only doable if your have a large fleet. For smaller fleets, this option may not work, especially if everyone is trying to store their own DOFFs.
Out of this entire situtation, I would like to see Cryptic post the limitation values of the following:
Max Number of Emails Stored (Accout/Character)
Max Number of Email Attachments Stored (Accout/Character)
Max Number of BOFF Slots (Paid)
Max Number of Outfit Slots (Paid)
Max Number of Ship Slots (Paid)
In addition, an entire Sticky, if not and addition to the spec sheet, on the Max Number of Slots (Paid/Unpaid/Account/Character) should be posted to one of the forums for reference so that players are aware that there are limitations whether or you are Gold or Silver member and can play accordingly.
I know people hate having the EULA/Terms of Agreement brought up in discussions but every one that I have read has some variation of a clause warning us that they can/will make changes to the game without prior notice.
Having said that I honestly wish this and every MMO had far better communications between the company and it's players.
The EULA is simply a legal disclaimer, not a legal contract or law. Simply stating something in the EULA does not necessarily absolve a software company of civil or criminal liabilities for actions they might take regarding the services their customers have paid for.
If a customer pays for a service and the company makes changes that affect the services the customer paid for they may have legal grounds for being awarded damages in court regardless of what the EULA states. I am not saying that this is the case here ( it would be hard to prove that you are entitled to damages as result of the change to the mail system as it is a tertiary part of the game), but it is important to remember when you pay for a product or service, you generally have a basic legal right to receive that exact advertised product or service or what a reasonable customer would accept as a valid substitution or alteration to the original advertised product or service.

And just to build on this, the enforceability of a EULA on a member is questionable. It is rarely challenged due to the burdens involved in doing so, but it may or may not be enforceable if it were ever challenged for some reason. Mandating a quick click before playing as an assent to a variety of terms and services users may not understand is somewhat harsh to enforce. I will say that PWE TOS/EULA isn't too difficult compared to many software agreements so I certainly wouldn't bet against it.
However that is a tangent to the discussion concerning mail issues we have been having and mysterious disappearing emails some are experiencing.
I'm a lifetime sub and don't post those LTS-deserve-everything-type-messages (as you can see this is my first post). And like many of you, I think I have missing mail and missing items. As an LTS, I have paid for "unlimited access" to in-game mail. See http://sto.perfectworld.com/about/features-matrix
So I don't see that I'm using the mail system as a loophole or an expl@it. So I kindly request unfettered access to my mail account and hope that my unsold items returned to me are also not lost. I have 12 characters slots and find the mail system necessary to send resources back and forth, especially to upgrade DOFF crews. My preferred fix would be for Devs to provide an account-wide doff personnel system so I can readily reassign DOFFs to my various toons and allow me to store extra DOFFs for my captains, and convert unwanted for upgrading my starbase into currency (see below). I'd pay for that convenience. >> HINT for Cryptic << At this point due to items being returned to me as unsold going into limbo and my current limited access to the mail system, I won't be buying any keys or doff packs, as I am unable to use the mail system to store away my excess items.
My only other suggestion for the doff-needs for starbase upgrades issue would be for a conversion tool to convert DOFFs into a new DOFF currency. The rarer the DOFF the more points. Then allow any fleet upgrade/projects currently requiring DOFFs to use this new currency, instead.
The item storage situation is an old and painfull one. This game has such limited item storage compared to other MMO's. Star Wars Galaxies had an awesome ground combat system that blows away what exists on STO, and that fact you could have player housing and build cities on planets made it truly feel like an MMO environment.
If STO is unwilling to upgrade their ground combat UI, firing and reaction speed time of ground UI, player housing and storage, and get rid of this horrible pay-for-everything and anything attitude then this game will die off. In SWG I did not have to mail myself items just to be able to store them. I simply landed on a planet that my guild had a city on, went to one of my many houses, and placed my loot that I wanted to store in a labeled bag or decorative storage cabinet. The ground combat in SWG also blows away what we have here in STO. You could actually make combat macros to fire off your powers instead of having to hammer on the keys 10 times to make a power fire like in STO. When you hit a button that controlled a power it fired off right away. I was able to make my combat macros with only .6 seconds delay between the different powers firing.
I am a Beta-Lifetime Vet. I also purchased the $140.00 Romulan package. I have continued to put money into the game through the C-store, and now the Zen-store. I have 20 characters. Eighteen of the 20 are max rank and geared, and the 19th and 20th are at levels 47 and 44. Imagine the storage problems I have even with boosted banks on numerous characters. Our mail limits for Lifetime accounts are supposed to be unlimited. If we were not to be able to store or transfer items with it then there should never have been the ability to do so. This is simply another cash-grab further moving this game away from the MMORPG type game setup, to a visually aided money-milking scam.
Please stop destroying the things that actually work in the game, and are necessary due to the lack of player owned cities and housing, horrible personal storage limits, and limited personal banks. Nerfs and penalties for using the storage means we have access to will simply drive away newer players, and stop others from even bothering to give the game a chance.
Did you actually bother to read what Cryptic defines as limited access in that link you provided? You are aware that you can do that by mousing over the question mark and reading the pop up window that provides more details.
"limited" access means you can only send emails to "friends", and "unlimited" means you can send emails to anyone.
It makes no mention or guarantees about the number of attachments an email can have nor does it mention anything about whether emails can and will be stored indefinitely.
What you "paid" for, was the ability to send emails to any other person in the game. And that is all"unlimited access" means.
Nor does it mention that the emails you send will have any attachment limit at all. It goes from limited targets to unlimited. No mention of attachment limits at all so why the heck would you infer any? In fact there were no meaningful attachment limit until the LoR patch. So your telling me, that I should have viewed some hidden 100 attachment limit across all my characters because I misread the word unlimited and the mail had never operated with a meaningful limit.
The mails had been in operation as defacto unlimited since early on and people used it as such for years. That is how it worked. Then, suddenly, they switch it overnight unannounced and create loads of problems with how many players have been utilizing it (primarily for doffing but also commodity stacks and other items not immediately needed). I just can't see how anyone can defend and parse what was said to infer some magical limit? If it was a new game, fine, but this game has been in operation for years.
Where is the evidence supporting your assertion that this magical word unlimited somehow means a handful of attachments if you have multiple accounts? You don't seem to see the inherent flaw in your viewpoint and understanding and it is frustrating because you seem to be defending something that is nearly indefensable. The large scale harm of numerous accounts due to an arbitrary limit imposed unannounced and untested.
If there was a better designed doffing system and mechansims, we probably wouldn't need the mail but what is the harm in me putting stuff I don't immediately need in the mail? Regardless of your viewpoint, as it stands these changes are creating many issues and we would like some way to address them in game via additions which will help to allow the handling of doffs. that is what these threads are about.
i still want to know how they intend to make it so if you have more then one char and you get a ton of exchange expires, or someone decides to throw you a bunch of items in an email..
do they return to sender, do they get deleted, or do they go in limbo where eventually you will get them..
if its the last one then why was the change needed at all? the item is still there.. its still taking up space.. you are still actually over 100 items..
i dont see any kind of benefit of this change at all.
im actually seeing a huge loss.. as i lost items.. probably directly related to them messing up the email system..

Yep, that's right. As an LTS, I have the right to send unlimited emails to anyone, including myself. I can attach items to my mail, too. I do not understand why you choose to imply undefined limits to my unlimited access to the in-game mail system e.g. time limit and ability to attach items.
its really not about sending unlimited emails to yourself..
its about losing items that are sent to you

It was not in the best interest of players (FTP or Gold/LTS) to do this without announcing. I think it's beyond the pale that Cryptic would change an established game mechanic without providing a grace period OR an alternative remedy -- showing a disregard for time and real money that players have invested in the game.
Aarons9, I was not disregarding your pain or position or need for answers. I'm simply using the strongest argument that I have to try to get some movement on the issue.
I'd like to thank daedalus27 and bloodthristy187 for their support of what should be obvious to all.
You can misinterpret Cryptics definition of "limited" and "unlimited" all you like, but it doesn't change the fact that it has nothing to do with attachments.
The limitation was put into effect to combat email abuse by RMT sites.
And since the limitation is so easy to remove I wouldn't be surprised if the company used "preventing RMT abuse" as justification for the email changes.
TRIBBLE up your customers playing experience to combat RMT is quite possibly the stupidest thing I have heard of. What they really need to do is sit down with an internal test server, some Devs and an ungodly amount of caffeine, and just rebuild the mail system from scratch so that it isn't complete and utter cr*p.
I don't see how RMT affects STO and attachments. You can't send EC or dil that way, it is only for items. Or is this for othe rgames and STO is a side effect?
