Why are my ships in boxes?!

Just purchased a D'D retrofit and i have to wonder....

Why was it in a box?

I can't trade it, it's character bound...?

Why is it not just a normal ship like any of the free ones/2409 varients?

I understand why it's done for the 3 packs (My Aventine was in a box) because it can't give you 3 if you only have space for 2...

This is most odd, anyone know why Cryptic do this?

Well, I know for the Legacy and Starter packs, it gives you all the boxen right up front, so you'd be getting a VAdm ship at level 1. I'm sure the game engine would be very Not Happy about that sort of thing. A box seems like the existing solution.

I believe they do this to avoid complications if you have no empty ship slots. Like if you try to open the box it just tells you that you have no slots free for it, but the box in your inventory proves that you did actually purchase it and that there isn't an error with the C-store maybe? I suppose they could make it so that you just can't claim it from the C-store if you have no empty slots, but I don't know how their system really works. That's really the best answer I can think of. Other than that I don't know lol.

That's basicly it, avoiding level and ship slot issues.

Back during the anniversery event, just about anyone could do Temporal Ambassidor, and you still got BOTH versions of the reward ship; both in boxes, both bound.

I'm still holding onto the tier 3 versions in their boxes. Since all the toons I had at the time were level 50, I only needed the higher one.
Everywhere I look, people are screaming about how bad Cryptic is.
    What's my position?
That people should know what they're screaming about!
