Training Boffs

I know this is a newbie question, but I can't find the answer anywhere.

I know that somehow my Captain can train Boffs in certain skills. I've even gotten the notice "you can now train Boffs, in XYZ skill".

For the life of me, I cannot figure out how it works. Can someone give me a clue?

    on ur status pop-up, bottom next to ur edit record, is the "train officer" button which is also used when u promote ur boffs to the next level
