I decided to replay Taris today to compare how the Federation follow up to Revelations on the Romulan side was.
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
The result: it doesn't work.
1st: Taris is depicted as two different people in these two missions. The Federation version simply paints her as a loyal servant of the Iconians and willfully murdered everyone on Romulus. Meanwhile, in Revelations, Taris claims she was tricked by Hakeev and that's why she's in hiding. The later is a more nuanced interpretation so the evidence should show that she was "recommended" to launch the device by Hakeev's advice and her private logs (which the player would have downloaded and reads from his/her's ready room) should show remorse about the incident and a genuine effort to fight Hakeev.
2nd: This would be a great chance to introduce Hakeev to the Federation captain. He is searching for her after all. The final space battle could feature a new flagship for Hakeev (which promptly is destroyed and he Iconian Gates out again) and set up for the upcoming mission "Sharien's Sword"
3rd: Let us get some interaction after this battle where Taris surrenders to Admiral T'Nae in exchange for some information about her "Dread Masters" she requests she be kept safe from them and the Tal Shiar hence her being sent to Facility 4028.
I think this would make this a more important mission in the story arc that fits better with the new information we've learned over the past 2 years.
I assumed that Taris is lying through her teeth to either you-the-Romulan or you-the-Feddie. Either she's lying to you, the Romulan Republic guy, on behalf of her dread masters, or she's fronting to the Starfleet crew who have dared kick down her door.
On a related note - I was disappointed that my Romulan toon was stuck being so piously disapproving of the Iconian technology. Just because he's accepted Federation aid doesn't mean he drank their Kool-Aid.
Steal it and refurbish it on behalf of New Romulus - find out if that talk about restoring Romulus is actually true! (I let the Borg thing slide because, hey, he had a bad experience and doesn't want other Romulans to get killed in the process...)
